Roy Moore defeats Luther Strange in Alabama Senate runoff

Alabama voters today pick a Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, choosing between former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore and Sen. Luther Strange.

Today's winner advances to face Democratic nominee Doug Jones on Dec. 12 to fill the Senate seat Jeff Sessions left to become President Trump's attorney general. Strange has held the seat on an interim basis since accepting the appointment by former Gov. Robert Bentley in February.

Nothing in life is certain, but I did see a pre-runoff poll that showed that Moore would beat Jones by a larger margin than Strange would.

Now, I confess that confused me some, but perhaps MAGA nation was signalling their disgust with establishment Washington by sitting out. Who knows?

In any event, it would be a huge political shocker for AL to send a Senator to caucus with Chuck Schumer.

As much as I hate to admit it, that statement from McConnell was classy.

It acknowledged that Strange was the favored candidate, but consolidates support for Moore.

It immediately shuts down any nonsense chatter about Senate Republicans somehow supporting the Democrat.

I doubt they will help Moore with his campaign, maybe just a paltry sum just to say they did help. If they do really pitch in I'll eat my hat.

Still, he invested a lot, and his candidate got soundly beaten, and he took it like a man. Well, at least his statement indicates such.

I promise I'm no fan of McConnell, but that statement closes the book on this primary and sends a clear signal that the "party" will be supporting Moore.

I did see a pre-runoff poll that showed that Moore would beat Jones by a larger margin than Strange would.

Makes complete sense. There is a hefty strain of populist in the swing and centrist vote in Alabama, and have a real issue with Chamber of Commerce Republicans like Strange. Most of them will grudgingly vote for them over a liberal Democrat, but plenty stay home, and some will vote for the odd populist / moderate Democrat if one happens to be up. (For example, the GOP narrowly losing the Governorship in North Carolina last November while Trump won at the top of the ticket.)

My guess is he knew Roy had it but by supporting the sitting senator he can say to those he has to work with “look I tried but it didn’t work”. It is also a definite shot across the bow for the GOPe. If even Trump can’t reverse the trend what chance will a politician have?

His endorsement last Friday night was immediately buried by the NFL controversy and dropped off the radar. This was deliberate in my opinion. It was as though he made no endorsement.

I am reasonably certain that Sessions is being blackmailed by the Swamp. You don’t stay in elected office that long without skeletons in your closet and his behavior has been consistent with someone who is being blackmailed.
