Then lets stop politicizing sports by even playing the national anthem or God Bless America before or during the games. How bizarre would it be if each day you showed up at work as a plumber or truck driver or lawyer and you first had to stand for the national anthem?
Also, when exactly did how we behave during a national anthem become a litmus test on our patriotism? I mean, if I stand but dont put my hand over my heart, am I less patriotic than the guy next to me who does? How about if he puts his hand over his heart, but I salute? What if I sing along?
Right, it is all ridiculous. It is a song after all, not a particularly good one. The flag is a piece of fabric. These are symbols. Real patriotism is using your First Amendment rights and defending those who do so peacefully, even if you dont particularly like their speech.
As the leader of the most important country on the globe, he had two avenues to go down with this issue open a civil dialogue about what the symbolism of flags and national songs mean or incite a fight. He started a fight. This is talk-show America now scream loud, dont listen to others and the most relentlessly vicious wins.
Remember those who are protesting are not doing so against the flag or a national song. They are doing so against injustices they see, notably racial injustices. Maybe you dont see them. It seems our president does not. But it is his job to actually protect those who see them and want to make statements about it, and it is at the very core of our value system to allow peaceful dissent.

“it is at the very core of our value system to allow peaceful dissent”
Americans know this and are peacefully dissenting ... but they’re in a much different position.
The football field is a place of business. Wonder if ‘peaceful dissent’ would be allowed if a NYP employee tried it while on the job?
Would that employee’s 1st Amendment rights apply — being that it’s ‘at the very core of our value system to allow (it)’?
And if not, why not?
The plumbers, carpenters, store clerks, office workers, and the rest of the millions of others don’t have to sing the National Anthem everyday when they go to work, they just support the morons who could not do any of those jobs, but get make millions of dollars to play a game from the taxes those other millions pay to watch them.
They also fly flags in front of their homes, send their loved ones to fight and die under that flag and yes,On their own dime go into the streets across the country and to its capitol, holding the flag high,to voice their grievances, that’s how it works.
We don’t have the luxury to go before millions on Sundays or on tv shows in front of millions to spew banal slogans and moronic ideas.
If they want to kneel at the National Anthem do it on your own dime and time,I’m sick of actors, actresses, and sports stars using the public airwaves to denigrate its citizens and our country
Typical LibTaint response to LibTaint caused problem...
Never head of Joel Sherman. His article reads like it was written by a misguided high school student with average writing skills and intelligence.
The post is a semi-literate rag that sometimes goes over to the right side, but mostly entertains half-wit New Yorkers who can’t read words over 2 syllables.
“The flag is a piece of fabric. These are symbols. Real patriotism is using your First Amendment rights and defending those who do so peacefully, even if you dont particularly like their speech.”
I’m going to guess the “Sherm the worm” hasn’t written any columns against Leftist Universities and Antifa who are loudly, actively and VIOLENTLY opposing free speech. Has he written any columns about free speech at Google or Facebook? Anything about people who are attacked lose their jobs because they donate money to a political party or candidate? Seems doubtful. F’ing leftist tool and scambag.
The guy misses the point completely. What he describes here happens all the time. This isn't just a case where a player or group of players were simply doing something on their own that someone might deem "less respectful" by some subjective measure (fiddling with a piece of clothing, blowing bubblegum, etc.).
The players themselves have made a dedicated, concerted effort to make their actions a political statement in a way that THEY have decided is a demonstration of something less than full respect.
About 1775.
What if you put your hands on your "package" like Obama did?
What if you make a comment like "all this for a damn flag" like Michelle did?
What if you sing the Anthem, and get the words wrong, like Hillary did?
“The flag is a piece of fabric”
Not necessary to read any further.
following people are paying their lies:

Many will lose their home because they unable to pay their rent because these Bwave Social Warriors need to take a stand.
Thought Experiment:

How many hotel employees will lose their jobs? HOmes or cars?
The Playuhs? Well, they get their check no matter what because their contract demands it.
Pretty sure they wont be worried about the electric bill this month...
So brave, as this stunt costs them exactly nothing....
” when exactly did how we behave during a national anthem become a litmus test on our patriotism?”
1776, you A$$HOLE.
The flag is a piece of fabric
‘Not necessary to read any further.’
This ‘piece of fabric/cloth’ is becoming a mantra.
Just for myself, it’s the third time within the past hour that I’ve read ‘piece of fabric/cloth’ on Free Republic... Plus at least one time yesterday.
Most school children used to start their day with an oath of allegiance to that same flag.
Hey NFL, display your flaming Hillary butt hurt on your own time.
“....A private organization can set conditions for employment....”
P*R*I*V*A*T*E organization.
These guys are “at work”. It’s a “JOB”. Try telling your boss to F*ck off at work in front of co-workers or give him the finger. We’ll see you in the unemployment line.
” How bizarre would it be if each day you showed up at work as a plumber or truck driver or lawyer “
How bizarre would it be if each day you showed up at work as a plumber dressed as a lawyer or a lawyer dressed as a plumber?
Try telling your boss that it’s your freedom of expression. He will exercise his freedom to FIRE YOU!
“Then lets stop politicizing sports by even playing the national anthem or God Bless America “
Stopped right there. The flag and national anthem have nothing to do with politics.

Back in the 50’s children in my school rose for the Pledge of Allegiance and Bible verses were read out. We should return to that practice.
