~ Star Spangled Banner ~ Written by Francis Scott Key (1814)
Canteen Mission Statement
Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allies military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.
The War of 1812 had been a particularly nasty conflict with the British. They had burned down the Capitol and the White House in Washington, and were set on taking the port of Baltimore, which was protected in part by Fort McHenry, just to the south. On September 7th, 1814, during the build-up to the attack on Baltimore, two Americans, Colonel John Skinner and a lawyer and part-time poet by the name of Francis Scott Key, had gone out to one of the British ships. They had come to negotiate the release of Dr William Beanes, a friend of Key who had been seized following the attack on Washington. The British agreed, but all three had learned too much about the forthcoming attack on Baltimore and so were detained by the British on board the frigate Surprise until it was over. The attack started on September 12th, 1814, and after an initial exchange of fire, the fleet withdrew to form an arc just outside the range of Fort McHenry's fire. Skinner, Beanes and Key watched much of the bombardment from the British deck. The major attack started in heavy rain on the morning of September 13th. Just under three miles in the distance the three men caught glimpses of the star-shaped fort with its huge flag - 42ft long, with 8 red stripes, 7 white stripes and 15 white stars, and specially commissioned to be big enough that the British could not possibly fail to see it from a distance. In the dark of the night of the 13th, the shelling suddenly stopped. Through the darkness they couldn't tell whether the British forces had been defeated, or the fort had fallen. As the rain cleared, and the sun began to rise, Key peered through the lifting darkness anxious to see if the flag they had seen the night before was still flying. And so it was that he scribbled on the back of an envelope the first lines of a poem he called Defense of Fort M'Henry. O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming

Awesome that you had a good show to watch. There are so few of them worth spit. LOL!
So relieved that you heard from your friends and that they’re ok. I know it was eating at you.
And...yep I saw that #49 and thought I’d better at least try! LOL!

Yeah, I tune it out, too, when they pull that crap. They ruin it. Singing it the way it was written makes the heart soar.
Sounds like your day’s been a good one, having your son there all day. Also sounds like a trip to the grocery store will be necessary tomorrow. LOL!

Yes, I saw that and it was a bit heart-wrenching. Those folks have lost everything and that’s a horrible feeling. They’ve also been cut off from the world since there’s no tv, internet, or cell phone service down there.
It’s still chilly here but will warm up into the upper 70s tomorrow IF the sun comes out like they said it will. Upper 80s through the weekend.
Glad this hot spell you’re dealing with will be a short one.

I’m going to miss the show once it’s over. I like shows that you have to pay close attention to because there are all sorts of little things going on that are significant to later scenes. You miss something, you get lost later on and with all the twists and turns, it’s easy to get lost with this show.
Oh man, I cried with relief when I heard from them, especially the friend from GA. I was pretty sure the friends from FL had evacuated (they had) but was concerned about their home. Thankfully, it’s intact and dry.
The friends in GA were another matter because they hadn’t gone any where. No one expected it to get that bad around the Atlanta area and they got slammed. The power was finally restored to their area late this afternoon and she emailed right away. Their next door neighbor had a HUGE tree fall on her house and it’s a miracle she got out alive and unscathed. The house is destroyed. But everyone is ok and the relief is huge right now. I’ve been sweating bullets the last three days.
LOL! Yep, when you see that #49, it’s time to make the move immediately.

Sorry to be so long responding!
I was having “ice cream therapy”!
*big toothy grin*
I know many people have been praying, and I also know that prayer works!
I will write and thank all who prayed!
“Did Tigermouz miss you? :)”
LOL
Yes, I think so, he caressed my face with his paws, and nibbled on and kissed my chin. He either missed me, or is trying ti figure out if I would taste good with a nice Chianti!

That is so cool that she is teaching such a good thing to middle school kids.
It seems that our kids are learning NOTHING of our proud history anymore; that America is a bad place. It is sickening.
Thanks to Mrs Lightman for the fine job she is doing.

Now why do I get the feeling “glad to be home with my Hubby and kitteh!” is a bit of an understatement? :-)
Lil Tigermaus is probably trying to figure out just who you are. “Looks like Mummy, sounds like Mummy, but smells so different.” LOL! You went home smelling like the hospital and he has no clue WHAT that smell is.
But he’s obviously happy you’re home and so are we!

We’re ready for chilly to move on! Too early for it. Not quite ready to wear long sleeves and a sweater when making a store run. LOL! That’ll be here for keeps soon enough.
But it’s back to short sleeves and flip-flops this weekend. YAY!
