Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said in a new interview with 60 Minutes that the firing of James Comey as FBI director was the biggest mistake in modern political history.
In an unaired portion of the interview, Charlie Rose asked Bannon a line of questions about Comeys May 9 firing and the subsequent hiring of Robert Mueller as special counsel.
Someone said to me that you described the firing of James Comey as the biggest mistake in political history, Rose told Bannon.
That would probably be too bombastic even for me, but maybe modern political history, replied Bannon, who resumed his position as chairman of Breitbart News after he left the White House last month.
The firing of James Comey was the biggest mistake in modern political history? Rose repeated.
If youre saying that thats associated with me then Ill leave it at that, Bannon said.
Bannon also said that theres no doubt that Comeys firing set the stage for Mueller, a former FBI director, to be hired to oversee the Russia investigation.
Had Comey remained on the job, we would not have the Mueller investigation, would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going, Bannon said.
Bannon also said that he does not believe that Mueller should be fired, an idea that Trump has reportedly discussed with some advisers. Asked about those reports, Bannon said theres nothing I ever heard like that.

how so? Not only should Comey have been fired , the moment he arrogantly described leaking to the NYT he should have been arrested , held without release and prosecuted under Federal statues . It is unbelievable that they let this SOB walk . Want to drain the swamp? Start with THIS cretin .
I'm almost inclined to believe that Comey set up President Trump....from Day One.
He wasn’t fired soon enough. Never mind the many other Obamaites still on the job.
No....Bannon is right on....and his opinion of events is certainly warranted. He’s the good guy. He is for Trump....100%.
The only part of the “mistake”, if it may be called that, was not doing the firing on the first day Donald Trump assumed the office of the Presidency.
In fact, Obama totally lacked the gumption and testicular fortitude to do the job on July 5th, 2016. But back then, Comey was still a useful idiot, and they still thought they could keep a lid on things.
>>Had Comey remained on the job, we would not have the Mueller investigation, would not have the Mueller investigation in the breadth that clearly Mr. Mueller is going, Bannon said.
It’d still be happening. Democrats were calling for Trump’s impeachment before he was sworn in.
Democrats wanted Nixon impeached in his first term, long before Watergate.
Democrats wanted Reagan impeached in his first year.
Democrats ended the peaceful transfer of power decades ago.
Kick these partisan hacks out of their unelected offices and Mueller, as Comey’s good friend, should’ve recused himself from the investigation.
Comey testified to pretty much exactly that when he talked about making records of his conversations with Trump. He was planning for this happen.
Worse than Hillary not campaigning in the Rust Belt ?
Correct. Comey should have been told to have his resignation on the President’s desk by noon on Inauguration Day. The entire episode would have been a footnote.
It is hard to square everything Bannon says with what Bannon does and what Trump does...the logic to keep a traitor there and leaker is tenuous...purposeful doublespeak maybe?
After the election and way before he actually took office, Trump and Sessions had decided to start clean with new people at the FBI and CIA.
Comey is/was a fixer for Hillary. Trump was exactly right to fire his corrupt ass.
He wasnt fired soon enough. Never mind the many other Obamaites still on the job.”
Agree. Shades of J Edgar Hoover; power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It’s time for congress to revisit the FBI’s reach and authority and maybe strengthen its limits. Put it in common people speak; Comey got too big for his britches.
Comey and McCabe should have been shoen the door day one.
Bannon was against the firing before Trump acted.
I think the Jivanka hiring, the initial Priebus hiring, and the Flynn firing in effect may all be as or more consequential—unless the Dems end up impeaching Trump over his recorded deliberative thinking (with the drafted letters) behind the firing.
The article is essentially fake news wherein a presstitute fails to get the response desired but the writer chose to ignore that fact.
The corruption within the FBI is being exposed. If anything will be done about it, is another question.
If youre saying that thats associated with me then Ill leave it at that, Bannon said.
What the heck?
