Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

That is quite a visual lol
They’re not alone.....Fox and the Weather Channel are starting to get hysterical. Janice Dean can hardly speak....”catastrophic” is all she really has to say.
Dr.Ed Rappaport you can tell he knows his stuff good report.
This storm surge video is important viewing, based on latest data. Storm surge will be ....unreal.
Try the far northern OBX, you might be able to get a text out, that is if you can get any cell reception at all. No paved roads, got to have a 4x4 to get there. Wild horses, running free. You can hear them neighing back and forth to each other in the maritime forest at night. The best stargazing is tucked up against the Virginia border, 13 miles up from the end of the pavement. Practically no light pollution, the VA side is False Cape State Park. The whole island is a dune field, so it seems hilly particularly behind the tree line. In front of it, where storm overwash prevents growth of much vegetation, it’s wide open sand like a desert. Climate in fact is a xeriscape, despite the frequent rain and humidity. The wind dries it out, the salt acts as a desiccant and the sand drains very easily. So, there are a surprising number of desert-like species that can grow there if sheltered from the salt air, by a larger dune or a structure.
I mean it’s not going to be catastrophic. To me that word is reserved for when an earthquake kills thousands in India, or the Tsunami in Thailand killing 230,000280,000 people in 14 countries.
Property damage/obliteration is horrible for people but things can be rebuilt and hopefully they have good insurance.
No turn yet is good for eastern Florida, but if she slips into the gulf, she can come back and hit anybody.
Isn’t that Irma NW wall flattening out? Is it up against that advancing wall?
YEP...and for those that are tend to learn by sight:
Forecasters: "The barometric pressure is dropping!"
Johnny : "......and......Irma is getting LAAAARRRGER!"
Via my in laws from Del Ray again south east Florida. Tornado on the ground in Boca Raton as of 4 pm
Hmmm... someone else does all the cleaning. I like THAT. Would have to be during non-hurricane season.
Her actual track line, if drawn out now, brings her to Houston. Us Texans are hoping for some turning soon.
It’s going 295 degrees now - just a 5 degree turn. Speed is still 125 MPH (Category 3).
There is now a third Irma thread !!!
Still just W-NW... But, slowing down. North turn is coming. Pressure is dropping again too..
...typically, hurricanes pick up wind speed when entire storm is over warm, open waters...it doesn’t in the span between Cuber and Florida without some parts over land...no moisture gained over land, and storm slows...possibly 5mph more and a couple times ‘s on pressure, but i don’t see much change unless it gets in open waters of gulf.
It appears to be flattening out a bit.
It’s outer bands have been hitting land on both sides for hours now (Cuba and South FLA).
