Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Pressure has dropped a little more to 933mb. Winds still at 125 mph.
It's such a secluded place you cannot use gps nor cell-phones once you travel deep enough into the woods...... and we're at the highest point of the hills surrounding this wondrous place...... there are no sounds of traffic nor the usual daily hustles....there's a silence in the air that breathes refreshment..... When it rains it simply reveals an ambiance about it warm and inviting for a lazy afternoon ...with a steaming pot of homemade soup filling the air and the fellowship we share together...........All is well in the world.... there... in our Mountain retreat.
I always come back home more rested and at peace than any other place I've ever been.........there is something beautiful and almost magical about the forests of our country....and the best place for me to escape to. I visit and tour the ocean beaches..... but I live and breath anew in the Forests of Gods Country....therein is the difference for me.
The book , A Flash of Green is about the crooks involved in the development of Bird Key off Sarasota .
His home was on the south tip of Siesta Key near that closed Midnight Pass .
Lots of great novels by John M in his time .
There are plenty of concrete structures on Key West now compared to 1935.
They should be fine as long as they are 2nd - 3rd floor above storm surge....
I would not want to be in Hemingway house though!
Hey its CNN. You already know to drastically lower you expectations. Just lower them some more....
Oh its definitely heading NW riding the coast of Cuba but I think when the media or others refers to “the turn” they mean the obvious cut up NW toward the Keys etc
Oh yea......I thought of that too or they wouldn’t have let the sit in the water........

My Dad loved John MacDonald’s books. He had a ton of them. Coincidentally, today is Dad’s birthday. He would’ve been 88 today if he were still alive. Thanks for reminding me of one of his favorites. I haven’t thought about those books in years. Happy Birthday, Dad! Miss you!
Poor Marco Island , its dead center of this monster storm .
Beautiful place and it’s a shame .
