Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Wife’s brother in Lakeland boarded up and moved out of a manufactured home in a retirement community to a nearby hotel.
They’re aunt died in Charlie (Arcadia) and other aunt (Port Charles) lost everything when her home was destroyed. Other family members had major damage. I saw the devastation first hand when we went to Arcadia for the aunt’s funeral. Blue tarps covering roofs, traffic signals down, windows in businesses blown out everywhere.
I’m glad your sister is safer now.
BTW, wife’s brother in Tallahassee says hundreds of people are camped at the rest stop just west of Tallahassee on I-10. Out of gas or no other place to stay. Cars parked on the side of the freeway a mile or more on either side of the rest stop.
We all like you!
Why would that many people be w/o power in Miami?
I read a report that Miami was turning off the power in places to encourage evacuation.
Speak for yourself.
j/k
;)
Okay, really all we can do is watch. No sense in people getting snappy over a hurricane. We have ZERO control over Irma.
Just get your arse out of the way and pray.

More like encouraging criminal behavior.
But okay.
Through 2AM, expect NE gusts to 50 mph as rain band moves across Middle & Lower Keys......First rain bands of Irma being felt now in parts of South Florida,... Pinecrest reporting some power flickering.
Earlier on the thread someone said that was an internet myth from early today. I don't know myself, just repeating what I read.
Glad your sister's out of her trailer, Ingtar!
at 8PM Saturday with 130 mph sustained winds & 160 mph gusts
Ok now even I can’t deal with the drama. The worst in US history? Come on now this thing isn’t even as strong as Camille was. And it hasn’t made landfall yet. It’s bad, no doubt. But bring it down a notch.
Oh no
All those retirees
And Sanibel/Captiva
Oh no
MIAMI 2AM ADVISORY:
... Hurricane Irma moving west about 275 miles from Miami...
Wouldn’t surprise me to see all of the computer models wrong...with Irma laughing as she continues West or even SW before the eye hits Miami.
If you don’t understand the “hype” being spun by local and national meteorologists for ratings-— that is to say increasing the “woo-woo” factor to scare the shut-ins and raise ad revenue rates (which weather channel does btw during storm coverage)— then you can give ad hominems all you want. And still be wrong.
While it is good tactics to “err on the side of intensity” in media’s assist of the governmental types trying to evacuate areas snd maintain rule of law, it is foolish not to see the upside on the revenue scheme that attaches to this concurrent civic assist.
And no- it will not be the worst possible hurricane in US history, until the millibar meaasured at sea level landfall reads 892 mbar (hPa) or 26.35” Hg (ie. the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, which parents survived and helped burn the bodies of the WPA and WWI Veterans on Islamorada)- and we as a family unfortunately were there for Camille in MS and Andrew in Kendall.
Some people in their dreary lives like the excitement of the danger, and the thrill of yelling “uh-oh” or rubbernecking the roadside carnage, and gin up website traffic in the internut age. Professionals of long experience do not do this, not even for major media bosses, thank goodness. www.nhc.noaa.gov NWS and the US Navy for example. Deo Vindice.
....."Keeping Florida & all others in Irma's path in my thoughts as you evacuate or shelter in place. Listen to officials, be safe! ".....
Considering the billions spent on getting the data points for the US forecasts this is embarrassing. Personally, as a open sea sailor— think the Euro is correct and this will track much further West along and possibly into more of Cuba and make a turn even so far as passing Havana. In short, a real corker of potential intensifying and affecting the track up into Alabama to Pensacola. Either way though the rain and wind event on this will still be massive on FL.
