Trump overrules GOP with deal on spending, debt, Harvey aid
abc ^ | Sep 7, 2017, 12:30 AM ET | Erica Werner

President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.

...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.

The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...

At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...

"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.

Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...

The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

(Unfortunately, I’m not sure, at this point in this fight, which of the 3 main actors - Congressional GOP, Congressional Dems, or Trump - are fighting for conservative ideals at all.)

Therein lies the crux of the matter. We know Dems aren’t for sure.

Sadly, some people care more about the folks they've attached themselves to, rather than the ideals and principles that those folks supposedly espoused at some point. Wins for Trump are nice, but wins for America are more important. (Unfortunately, I'm not sure, at this point in this fight, which of the 3 main actors - Congressional GOP, Congressional Dems, or Trump - are fighting for conservative ideals at all.)

What is pathetic is those who ignore that the GOPe is worse than the libtards. They lie to get elected and then treat we the people like their house slaves.

The 17 nays also could have been part of the 25 that voted for the Sasse amendment to just vote on hurricane relief.

We are in the beginning stages of a war.

Both sides feeling each other out. I am no longer a “conservative” but a nationalist. Truthfully as an original Buchanan Brigade member I have always been a nationalist.

Conservative ideals brings us open borders with the stupid ass notion that America is an idea..... It’s like debating an autistin Libertarian retard... Muh Constitution.... How well is that “Constitution” working out for Liberia?

It’s the People. It’s the Culture. And anyone who is trying to force Muds on the USA or Europe is the enemy. I don’t care if it’s Paul Ryan or Pelosi.

Always remove traitors BEFORE the enemy. Pelosi/Schumer might be the enemy, but we must remove any kind of power from internal traitors. In a situation like this Trump should absolutely De-Ball faggot Ryan and Bitch.

Ryan, Mconnell, et al getting their feelings hurt is irrelevant.

As I understand, this is just a short term budget? They’ll come back to it in 3 months? Time enough to deal with the more immediate and necessary issues of dealing with the storms.

Yes irrelevant, and you understand right. It keeps the GOPe reigned in that they have to keep coming back for a new CR, or they can do a conservative budget. They want get avoid doing a doing a conservative agenda

Oh and I think it is RIDICULOUS to work with Dems just to say FU to republicans...because DEMS aren’t looking out for us AT ALL

I don’t recall the Republicans watching out for us either.

What is the difference between Pelosi and McConnell? An R or a D. That’s it.

Whichever side of the UNI-Party that President Trump can work with to get things done is fine by me.

Won’t be Schumer’s

Won’t be Trump’s

It will be a deal.

That’s what happens when the Republicans are ineffectual...at best...and saboteurs at worst.

They have only themselves to blame and the most they can do is howl at the moon. If they had any moxie or capability at all they’d have passed a few pieces of the agenda sometime in last 8 months. But all we get from them is lame excuses. When they grow up, maybe they can come back and try playing for keeps.

Yes, this isn’t their money that the politicians are giving away. It’s ours. Charity is voluntary or it’s not charity. I have never understood how politicians, especially liberals, are considered to be compassionate and generous for giving away money that isn’t theirs.

Other than McCain, Reagan didn’t have Trump’s problems.

You know what? If Ryan and McConnell passed a bill to fully repeal Obamacare on March 1st President Trump would sign it. Ryan and McConnell won’t.

You are correct. But there are plenty of examples where he compromised to “most” of what he wanted.

The issue is that the Republicans in Congress are not reliable. Do you think that LBJ would have ever run the Senate the way McConnel does?

We sent Trump to go there and get it done. Ryan and McConnel are upset because they didn’t get a chance to go for a longer term deal.

They would have talked for a month and still come up with what Trump got in an afternoon. With two massive natural disasters and the crap going on in Korea do you think that maybe there is a need for some urgency?

PRyno owes the country A Budget.

We have no confidence in that Rino Paul Ryan ever getting a budget passed.

We know that all Speakers must pass a budget but this Rino Ryan will not or can not since he is a Never Trumper. Maybe he will after all surprise us with a budget.

I wonder if this is why we have been doing a continuing resolution of the budget year after year and getting more in debt year after year.

We know the drunkard Boehner could not pass a budget, since all of his thoughts were on "Happy Hour Drinks" by the end of the afternoon maybe earlier.

We are toast with this Pubblie leadership right now.

I could have scripted every answer to your question. the fact that they are predictable doesn’t make them any less insane, however.

the real translation to all of the answers to your question is, “there isn’t a good reason, but we’re putting the best possible spin on the inexplicable.”

What did Reagan get in return for working with democrats back then? I can use the same tactics.

In the present, it remains to be seen what Trump “gets in return”. Right now we are all just speculating.

Trump may be doomed to repeat history if he hasn’t learned from it, or he may be counting on the fears that drive the same notion (that the republican party as a whole will be doomed to repeat history if they don’t finally, once and for all, act as legislators and work for the people and live up to promises made that got them elected in the first place).
