Trump overrules GOP with deal on spending, debt, Harvey aid

President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.

...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.

The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...

At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...

"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.

Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...

The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

Nope, I am a very very conservative person with few exceptions.

I do not approve of amnesty. I am asking if you do.

“So you support signing an amnesty bill when passed?”

Nice strawman! You should be on CNN or PMSNBC!

IF there is a amnesty bill passed I will want to read the fine print before I answer that question. In general I do not support amnesty for illegal aliens.

Do I believe there will be a veto-proof amnesty bill passed? Nope. In fact, I doubt such a bill ever comes up for a vote in the Senate.

Also, unlike you & your ilk, I support President Trump because IMO he’s doing an incredible job while all of the media & the DC Swamp, including his own party & folks such as yourself work against him. I expect President Trump will continue to drive you & the RATs crazier than ya are already for the next 7+ years. :)

What will Trump have to get in return for amnesty for you to support him signing an amnesty bill. Let’s narrow it to DACA people..not all illegals at this point.

Of course not, and are you certain you don’t work for the Dems?

You love to use Alinsky Rules for Radicals here particularly rule number #4.

“What will Trump have to get in return for amnesty for you to support him signing an amnesty bill.”

As I clearly slated I don’t believe a amnesty bill will come up for a vote in the Senate so your question is moot.

So if Trump signs amnesty for illegals will that make you a Dem because you don’t support amnesty for illegals?

I’m sorry but as non-sequiturs go, this one is HILARIOUS!!!

So let’s be clear for future reference. Are you saying Trump will never sign an amnesty bill for DACA illegals?

Nope, he is calling me a DEM because I am against some of the things Trump does...so will he be a DEM if Trump signs amnesty for illegals since he is against it.

Has anybody on this thread actually tried to argue that a 3-month extension of the debt ceiling is a good thing?

I’ve seen a lot of “this sticks it to the republicans who wanted a long-term debt increase”.

But where is the argument that doing this every 3 months is better?

We made that argument during Obama years, precisely because the debt limit gave the republicans power to force Obama to agree to their demands.

Which is why the democrats want it short now, because it gives them power to demand things every few months.

But why would the party in power want to give their opposition that opportunity, rather than resolving the issue?

LMAO!!! You are seriously cracking me up. You’re employing CNN tactics to the letter which explains why you’re so incredibly incompetent at persuasion & logic. Truly, hilarious.

I’ve stated quite clearly what I expect will happen regarding any amnesty bill. If no amnesty bill is brought up for a vote in the Senate then there is no amnesty bill for President Trump to sign.

At this point the republicans are a very fracture party with 3 main factions; the establishment wing(GOPe), the socialist wing(RINO’s), and the conservative wing (Freedom Caucus). Those 3 factions are in no way aligned so why even keep up with the pretense they are on one side.

I don’t see the GOP as fractured at all. They are united in their opposition to Trump’s agenda. Not a single one of the “Freedom Caucus” has withdrawn support from Ryan or McConnell despite their many, many betrayals of the party platform and base. Let us never forget the Freedom Caucus voted for Ryan. They own this mess just as much as anybody else, IMO.

Anyone who thinks Pelosi and Schumer are less dangerous is not a realist.

Anyone who thinks Ryan and McConnell have any interest at all in MAGA after the last 8 months has not been paying attention. Until the Congressional GOP breaks with them nothing will change.

“But where is the argument that doing this every 3 months is better?”

IMO in this instance, it’s a great idea.

A) The GOPe wanted a 18 month CR.
B) President Trump forces the GOPe to be accountable to voters in the 2018 primaries regarding the budget.
C) President Trump has created leverage to use against the obstructionists in the GOPe in a way that I expect will lead to pro-Trump GOP candidates to win some seats from the UniParty if they don’t work with him on tax relief at the very least.
D)I also wouldn’t be surprised if the President doesn’t get the funding for the wall out of this as well.

NOPE. I have clearly stated, in no uncertain terms, that Trump WILL sign an amnesty bill if presented to him.

Are you claiming he will NOT support amnesty by signing a bill if presented to him or do you agree he will sign it if presented to him..

Which is it?
