Trump overrules GOP with deal on spending, debt, Harvey aid

President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.

...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.

The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...

At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...

"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.

Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...

The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

Honestly, I’d love to see Trump, after explaining his frustration and reasoning, make an announcement that he is going independent.

The beatings will continue until moral improves.............I wonder how many times Trump will have to beat McConnell and Ryan over the head before they catch on?

It is surreal to see post after post applauding Trump working with Dems and saying it should continue.

Absolutely surreal

Sending aid is one thing but don’t kiss up to the demonrats by raising the debt.

Lesser of two evils?

A longer extension would also take away leverage from President Trump’s negotiating position.

By only extending the debt ceiling 3 months, he maintains the ability to threaten a government shutdown if the Congress sends him an unpalatable bill.

Probably because more than likely Meek Mitch told him “Look, I run the senate not you and you will only get what I decide to give you”

Simple solution, GOP, pass a damn budget.

If we did not have a #uniparty, it really would be that simple.

The problem is, the R party has been outed. The R’s and D’s have been playing “good cop, bad cop” with us for decades. It’s time the party steps up and respects their platform, not their careers.

No, surreal is seeing a GOP Speaker and a GOP Senate working as hard as they can to harm a new GOP president, imply that he is a Russian spy, a racist Nazi, a Mexican hater, and anything else they can sling at him.

so how does cutting a deal with the RATs get the deal passed ?
Repubs should be very worried about 2018 if they pass this thing.

There are names for people who think that. Among them are Democrat, liberal, leftist...

Not wanting to repeal 0dontcare was a big sign.

And judge a tree by its fruit.

I look at what elected officials DO, not what they say. The R’s are in very bad form. Sure, the D’s are comical, but what better way to out the R’s.

The establishment republican’s have brought this upon themselves by refusing to work with the President.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. President Trump can't count on a unified republican congress; especially the senate side.

At this point the republicans are a very fracture party with 3 main factions; the establishment wing(GOPe), the socialist wing(RINO's), and the conservative wing (Freedom Caucus). Those 3 factions are in no way aligned so why even keep up with the pretense they are on one side.

I think Trump knows this all too well. As bad as the dem side is; at least they can be counted on to vote one way. I personally wish the republican party was one big conservative Freedom Caucus but we all know what happens when we wish in one hand and fill the other with something unpleasant but real; it's the one that gets filled.
