I have the best job in the whole wide world: Im a teacher who gets to advocate for kids and for the work NEA members do, no matter what our job titles, to cultivate students curiosity and set them off toward fulfilling, successful futures. On September 8 at the National Press Club Headliners Luncheon, Ill get the chance to speak about all of that, along with the challenges we face and how we uplift public education in the pro-voucher Trump era.
Im humbled by the company Im in. Past luncheon speakers have included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Garrison Keilor, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and Billie Jean King. Wow!
I am also extremely grateful, because this provides a great platform for sharing our values as well as our enthusiasm for teaching, supporting, and nurturing students. Thats a super big deal, and I dont take lightly my obligation to speak up for our kids and the 3 million members across the nation. So be forewarned: I dont plan on mincing words during my remarks or during the question-and-answer period afterwards.
And speaking of questions, you can submit yours by 10 a.m. on the day of the event by emailing them to president@press.org. Make sure GARCIA is in the subject line.
If youre in the area, I hope you can attend the luncheon. My remarks are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. If you have questions, please send an email to reservations@press.org or call (202) 6627501.
Hey Ms. $265,000+/year education person,
In a 2015 survey why were US students ranked 28th world-wide in math and science, behind such luminaries as Latvia, Vietnam and Slovenia? Is it because those countries pay their teachers better? That they spend more per pupil on education?

Are these fools serious! Of course it’s rhetorical. Stuck on stupid hardly defines these idiots who use our children like pawns and a cash cow.
if she’s so impressed by her panel of supposed education experts, its clear why the NEA and so much of public education is in the toilet
Agreed.
Congress needs to eliminate all unions from government employment.
To me NEA stands for : Nemesis of Education in America. Its real clients are teachers and the bureaucracy that grows around them, not the students. Since Government is the source of income its ultimately Government that they serve . They do so by advocating socialist polices that increase government control. Government returns the favor by making it near impossible to get rid of bad teachers. Furthermore the education bureaucracy increases in size and cost. The only long term ultimate solution is simple: Separation of School and State.
Corey and the Unknown Comic have more wisdom to impart than Garrison Keilor . . .
“...and I dont take lightly my obligation to speak up for our kids...”. I never had any kids with her so who are the “our” kids she us talking about? There are “my” kids. There are some “our” kids when I refer to me and my wife. I might even refer to “your” kids if you have some. If they are not mine or yours I would probably refer to them as “those” kids.
So let me help her. You should only speak for your kids. If I need your help speaking for my kids (my kids need help in the art of not speaking) I will let you know. Other wise shut up.
Lilly, I am sure I speak for millions of people who long ago pulled their children out of any school your members worked at. I know both my kids, now success stories in their own right, never attended socialist “government” run schools. Yes, it unfortunately took me until the 3 rd grade to get them out..........a little court battle with the x missus you understand. They both lost! See, neither one of them had ever even heard of the NEA so they had no clue.
Finally, millions of us hope and pray that the end of the Department of Education is near and your cancerous organization with it.
“Past luncheon speakers have included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Garrison Keilor, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and Billie Jean King. Wow!”
wow, indeed! every one of them is recognized as a world-class expert in government schools ...
But but sixth graders need instructions on how to use strap ons /sarc
Well, some folks seem to think so.
Only it’s five year olds they’re now explaining this to, what homosexuals are and transvestites are.
Good freakin grief!
“With both of those and control of both parties, America as founded was finished because so-called conservatives sat on their fat asses and did nothing, showing not even enough interest in their children’s education to attend once-a-month schoolboard meetings.
Finished the sentence for you.
Im humbled by the company Im in. Past luncheon speakers have included Hate-America retards Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Garrison Keilor, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, and Billie Jean King
The Home School Legal Defense Association.
Home school your kids. Worth every penny. And you don’t have kids who are slaves to the teachers unions.
An alternative, but it is more intensive than even home schooling: be a teacher and/or run for your school board. With other like minded people. Infiltrate the swamp and change it.
Right after her speech she’ll be heading over to the nearest Auntie Fa riot to smash some heads with the rest of “the teachers” who bleed the tax payers.
Hey, TEACHER! Leave them kids alone!
She's humbled by that company?! A bureaucrat, a PBS nut job, a UN grifter, and two jocks. C'mon!
She also says she's a teacher - i wonder when was the last time she actually spent a day in a classroom.
Child abuse!
You wrote Sheila Jackson Lee! I’m triggered! Make her change her name!
