(SALT LAKE CITY) A Utah police officer's body camera video shows a hospital nurse being handcuffed after refusing to draw blood on an unconscious patient.
The video taken at University Hospital in Salt Lake City shows nurse Alex Wubbels calmly explaining to Salt Lake detective Jeff Payne that she couldn't draw blood on a patient who had been injured in a car accident. She told the officer a patient was required to give consent for a blood sample or be under arrest. Otherwise, she said police needed a warrant.
The dispute ended with Payne telling the nurse she was under arrest and physically moving her out of the hospital while she screamed.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Wubbels was not charged. Police have started an internal investigation, but Payne remains on duty.

“Judgments against cops should come straight out of the union pension fund. Give the union a good reason to oppose dirty cops, because dirty cops cost the union big time. Everybody worries about money. Under the current system, I dont think the union has any real reason to worry. Which to too bad.”
Excellent idea that should be shouted from the rooftops! Right now lawsuits are settled with insurance which is OUR tax money!
Are you insane? The cop needs to be fired.
“Judgments against cops should come straight out of the union pension fund.”
I agree. In the city of Minneapolis, there have a been a number of clearly documented instances when the cop administered a butt-kicking to a suspect who, at the bare minimum, sassed the officer.
The city has paid out so many settlements to victims of police over-reaction. Maybe if the unions had start ponying up the money for these settlements, they’d be a little more on top of the “thumpers”.
The Police Dept. needs to fire the cop’s ass and let him sue them if he has a problem with it.
That's right. Following the law should be NO DEFENSE if you don't submit to an out-of-control cop!
Resistance is futile, citizen!
But cops are supposed to know the laws right?
The ones they hire these days are more qualified to flip burgers or drive fork lifts than actually talk to people and act responsibly.
No wonder almost everybody hates cops!
Yes, they are government union employees.
Any demand to cut government spending, limit gold-plated benefits or increase accountability is a threat to these guys.
I suppose you can expound on what crime was committed by either the patient or the nurse?
Yes, please. By all means, enlighten us as to exactly what law was broken by the nurse.
Possibly charged with aiding and abetting a crime after the fact as well.
I see that in your rush to express your knee-jerk response in support of the police, you didn't bother to read about what actually happened.
Apparently the fellow was involved in a collision with a vehicle that the cops were pursuing in a high speed chase. Maybe you could tell us why it would be necessary for him to have a blood test, when he'd actually done nothing more wrong than being in the path of their possibly reckless behavior?
> Are you insane? The cop needs to be fired. <
What’s wrong with you?
Every command issued by a government official must be instantly obeyed! Instantly! It doesn’t matter if that order is confusing, or even illegal. It doesn’t even matter if the order violates the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution.
Warrants? Not necessary. Just obey.
She could be sued and lose her credentialing if she complied. A police officer does not have the right to demand a nurse draw blood on an unconscious patient, or anyone else, for that matter. He is not her employer. If the police want a suspected impaired driver to be tested for drugs or alcohol, they have people on staff who do that. If it’s a small town without staff, the state police have staff. I’m a registered nurse, and I know whereof I speak. If drawing blood were necessary to deliver emergent care, the nurse would be legally protected from being sued by the patient, but a doctor would be making the request, not a cop. That’s obviously not what’s going on here. The cop sounds like a bully, to me.
This cop needs to be fired, ineligible to work as LEO anywhere.
you get my vote for the worst post of the month.
Police officer should have requested a higher up make the decision, and he should have checked with his superior before making the arrest..better hope I am not on her civil jury for damages his conduct was outrageous imo and cannot be defended.
outrageous....
Don’t forget the Texas cops performing roadside cavity searches on women during a traffic stop. Twice! What’s more concerning is they actually had to pass a law against it.
“She told the officer a patient was required to give consent for a blood sample or be under arrest.”
Nonsense.
This would mean medical staff could never take blood from any unconscious accident victim.
Are you claiming a patient comes in to an ER and they can’t draw blood for tests if patient is unconscious?
If this was my wife or sister that cop had better be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.
Oh, here we go again.
*ducks for cover*
BUMP!
Another airhead floats by.
There are protocols to follow, what did she do wrong?
“She told the officer a patient was required to give consent for a blood sample or be under arrest.”
This is what the nurse said and it is nonsense.
This would mean no person who is unconscious could ever have their blood taken for tests.
