House Speaker Paul Ryan on Friday gave a major boost to legislative efforts to preserve protections for young undocumented immigrants -- and urged President Donald Trump to not tear up the program.
Responding to a question about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, on his hometown radio station WCLO in Janesville, Wisconsin, Ryan said Congress was working on a legislative fix to preserve the program. "I actually don't think he should do that," Ryan said of Trump's consideration of terminating the program. "I believe that this is something that Congress has to fix."
Ryan's statement offers the most public support by anyone in the Republican congressional leadership for some sort of legislation to protect the "Dreamers" under DACA. The popular Obama administration program -- which gives protections from deportation to undocumented immigrants that were brought to the US as children to work or study -- has long been targeted by Republicans as an overreach of executive authority. Nevertheless, a number of moderate Republicans alongside Democrats support the program and have offered legislation that would make the protections permanent. Ryan, who worked on comprehensive immigration reform before he became part of House leadership, endorsed that approach in the interview. "President (Barack) Obama does not have the authority to do what he did ... we've made that very clear," Ryan said in the radio interview. "Having said all of that, there are people who are in limbo. These are kids who know no other country, who were brought here by their parents and don't know another home. And so I really do believe there that there needs to be a legislative solution."

I’ve met his wife and children. Leave them out of this.
His wife is a well known Democrat. Correct? Or should we leave that out, too?
A DACA court hearing is coming up next week whether Trump will defend against a suit from ten states.
They have a decision...Trump and Sessions won’t defend DACA.
And Ryan. Your backdoor plan will go down in flames like all the rest of the attempts the past 15 years to give backdoor amnesty.
DACA is illegal. Rescind it. THEN, let Ryan propose a fix. And see where it goes.
Lets trade some DACA for the wall. As long as the current people on DACA stay out of trouble with the law. And they are already in the program and have not been arrested they can stay if we get a wall and total boarder defense funding. But they are not citizens. But the program does not add any more people.
Ryan needs to resign. He is a Democrat. Arrrghhh!!!
No, Ryan is a 21st Republican. Patriotic Americans are the interlopers in the progressive corporatist (GOP) party.
I agree with your take on it, or at least hope that’s how it plays out.
The great Repubicon has spoken.
Ryan is a complete piece of crap and he is still the only person I can think of dull witted enough to lose a debate with Biden.
There are two issues involved here: the status of those already granted temporary legal status under DACA and how we treat "children" who enter the country illegally with or without a parent. We had a flood of unaccompanied "children", most were teenage males or older, that came across our border seeking DACA status. There is nothing in the DACA rules that requires you to be brought here by a parent or anyone else. Here are the rules:
You may request consideration of DACA if you:
1. Were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012;
2. Came to the United States before reaching your 16th birthday;
3. Have continuously resided in the United States since June 15, 2007, up to the present time;
4. Were physically present in the United States on June 15, 2012, and at the time of making your request for consideration of deferred action with USCIS;
5. Had no lawful status on June 15, 2012, meaning that:
--You never had a lawful immigration status on or before June 15, 2012, or
--Any lawful immigration status or parole that you obtained prior to June 15, 2012, had expired as of June 15, 2012;
6. Are currently in school, have graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, have obtained a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or are an honorably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; and
7. Have not been convicted of a felony, a significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors, and do not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety.
Not only did Obama legalize over 900,000 applicants for DACA (the approval rate was 99.4%), but he also ordered ICE not to go after the parents of DACA recipients. He effectively protected millions from deportation.
The DACA program must be terminated to stop this from going to court and having Trump and DOJ defend an unlawful and unconstitutional program. And there can be no new applicants. Otherwise the USG is saying that forever and ever we will legalize the children of illegal aliens. When you reward something, you get more of it.
I agree it can be used as a bargaining chip by Trump (legalizing those DACA recipients) to get other immigration objectives like the Wall, mandatory e-verify, the end of birthright citizenship, etc. Unfortunately, about half of the public supports some sort of legalization for these "children." The left and their RINO allies have done a good job of snowing the public and gaining sympathy for the plight of these "children" who are just victims. The facts and reality are quite different.
Ryan can't so anything about DACA. It was set up by exec order and Trump can kill it the same way. Congress could pass a law and Trump would veto it. So why come out and say this? A few reasons:
Hot of the presses 23 minutes ago. We’ve seen time and time again when he does this. I predict goodbye DACA.
“Trump says DACA decision coming ‘today or over the weekend’”
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-daca-decision-coming-today-weekend/story?id=49545914
DACA was an unconstitutional power grab by Obama and usurpation of Congressional authority. If the Congresscritters want DACA then they can pass it into law and accept the consequences.
They wont do that, because they want to get re-elected.
Excellent...
Are you E'ffing kidding me? We didn't elect Republicans to majorities so the could work with the Liberals to make Amnesty deals.
Ryan is being disingenuous. He is in the pocket of the Chamber of Commerce that is for total open borders. As such, Ryan is just one of their puppets since he gets so much campaign donations from them.
Ryan is a punk.
Ryan got the word early on DACA and as always he separates the beltway GOP from POTUS. With friends like this, who needs enemies?
“I believe that this is something that Congress has to fix.”
Gee Paul, as Speaker of the House, with your party possessing House and Senate majorities, exactly why haven’t you fixed it, or done ANYTHING? Ryan reminds me of the classic coward who pretends his buddies are holding him back so he doesn’t have to fight.
The Chamber of Commerce House Boy does his “Step n Fetch It” act for his masters.
Yeah who needs enemies when Ryno only starts to move when it’s toward leftism.
ABC Spews about 30 minutes ago stating Trump will report his decision sometime this weekend starting today. It could come at anytime now.
