In case you were wondering how long it would take before you'd start seeing results of Amazon's recently approved acquisition of Whole Foods, the answer is "like, right now."
In addition the uniquely meaty merger of visual branding seen abovea photo caught at an LA-area Whole Foods location by USA Today's Los Angeles bureau chief Chris Woodyardprices are already starting to drop on many of Whole Foods' most popular items.

I'm upper-poor and shop at a food chain with lots of healthy, inexpensive items geared to a poor immigrant population. I'm not an uppity food shopper.
However, whenever I'm close enough to one to be there, Whole Foods was on my list. I like the variety of choices, the fresh foods, and the varied healthy selections, with new choices available on a regular basis.
Long term I can't imagine how Whole Amazon Foods will keep that up. Amazon is geared to proven choices, not innovation, not local tastes. As with shopping for books online, it'll be a matter of you'll never find something unless you're looking for it. Short term, it might be terrific. Long term, I'll probably be with the uppities. There won't be much point to the store if it isn't different enough.
lol. A few hippie looking kids won’t scare me away. I don’t shop for everything there but I love their pizza and veggies and meat department. Lots of bitter walmart shoppers around here it seems.
“Can govt do anything when one company starts taking over WAY too much?”
Well, there are anti-trust laws. But like any law these days, enforcement depends on who gives how much to the politicians and to the regulators.
Also, my understanding is that at an earlier time there were strict laws to prevent corporations from purchasing other companies outside of their own core business. The reason being one company should not be able to control all areas of the real economy, for obvious reasons.
I hear that was done away with years ago.
There isn’t one of these stores within driving distance. I have never seen one other than glimpses on a television show. I would never shop in one even if one was in my area.
Can govt do anything when one company starts taking over WAY too much?
...
Ask Bill Gates.
It’s also the reason that worm, Bezos, bought the Washington Compost.
>>>Can govt do anything when one company starts taking over WAY too much?
Total e-commerce sales are less than 10% of total retail sales. Amazon is about half that total. Walmart is closer to 10% of all retail sales. Do we want the government to step in and break up every company that has more than 5% of industry sales?
Aldis the best value place around.
Funny, the Left were bloodthirsty for breaking up Corporate monopolies/strangleholds when the Corporations were Right leaning....Now, the biggest Corporations in the world are run by Lefties and suddenly having a monopoly is ok?
Re: the BTC/AT&T breakup cartoon.
The Bell Telephone Company/AT&T was way too monopolistic. Imo it should have been broken up in the 50s, latest. It also held a stranglehold on teletype forcing the US government to continue using a 100 year old technologies (telephone and teletype).
It was also very expensive for a mature network, i.e. they were price-gouging. $30 per month in the ‘70s for local calling with ala carte long distance. That’s like $100/month today for local calling via a single land line which you rent from the company. It wasn’t until after the breakup that you were allowed to own and use your own phone.
FWIW the internet likely would not have become what it is without breaking the monopoly. BTC/AT&T would have used its stranglehold on USG communications to (continue) to block competing technologies.
“Go interview the folks selling produce (veggies) to Whole Foods. The demands are staggering.”
Please enlighten us, the deplorable ones!
Thanks
Dave
Why isn’t it OK for a smart well run company that is not a monopoly in ANY market segment (people love throwing the word around with Amazon but it is simply not true) to grow and continue to be a smart well run company?
“I dropped in on the Fairfield, CT store on Monday night after work and was impressed with the new prices on many items. All ready the Walmart shoppers were showing up. The uppity clientele there are going to have their beautiful store experience marred by regular folk. Lets see how tolerant they really are!”
BOL! My wife and I will wear our Walmart Shopping gear to visit our WF today. She looks great even in her sweats.
I will have my USN camo baseball hat on with an American Flag pin in it. One of my Under Armor tee’s with an American Flag and cargo shorts showing my hairy legs with scars from ankles to knees. As a topper, I will wear my yellow polaroid shooting glasses.
When you said: Can govt do anything when one company starts taking over WAY too much?
I took it as a serious question, and by way of an answer demonstrated the govt can and has done something.
Oh, and I did not intend the cartoon as an insult, more a bit of perspective on how a country with a total government FAILING monopoly viewed our breaking up of a private SUCCESSFUL monopoly...
It’s humor.
Shop there all the time. Good bulk food selection and prices.
I am in the fortunate position of not having to care what my food costs (no debts, no kids) and will spend whatever I care to in order to cook great meals. time and waistline are my only limitations; WF is not bad, but we have several local stores and a bunch of farmer’s markets with truly world class meat and produce.
Lots of pretty women shop there.
The QC checklist for all of the major chains is staggering. It’s no wonder that the variety of produce is narrowing to selections that meet cosmetic and shipping standards.
Keep your open pollinated and heirloom seeds.
How about a family of 10 including grandparents and 6 unruly kids of all ages blocking the aisles at COSTCO speaking a foreign language?
What do you think?
In my best Veruca Salt whiney voice: “But I want my cheap quinoa delivery by drone NOW, Bezos!’
Lol. Choices.
