Every liberal Republican campaigns as a conservative during the primaries (especially in states where Republican candidates are basically guaranteed to win in the general election) and then shows his true colors once in office. You'd think that McCain and Graham could have pulled this scam off once but the second, third, or fourth time people would wise up to it and get rid of them in the primaries. Apparently not.

However, for what it's worth, McCain is very unlikely to last the five years of his term, life expectancies for high grade gliomas are usually only a year or two. Maybe his Senate seat will be filled by somebody decent. If he weren't 85 years old, I'd suggest Joe Arpaio.
