I suspect that they can drop the rods and at least prevent a meltdown. Obviously that would also shut down power production for a while. Nothing like being hit by a tidal wave out of the blue.

Nuclear error?
I have no fear.
Houston is drowning and I live by the Gulf.

Seriously - never heard of this site - but a 3-5 cat hurricane and flooding is not in the disaster recovery plans for a nuke facility???
not buying it.

A little perspective. The “Nuclear Worker” quoted in the article is not a plant worker but is bringing in supplies for the plant crews. The potential catastrophic events refer to the effects on the surrounding area from the storm NOT from a potential nuclear accident. I am not on the ground at the South Texas Project (STP) but typical protocol for this type of event is to shutdown the the plant prior to winds exceeding a certain level or when a given time prior to landfall is reached. Therefore, the plant was shutdown at least a couple of days ago. Decay heat will have dropped. As long as the diesels remain operating no problems are anticipated. Not familiar with STP but typically coastal plants are designed for direct hit from the maximum credible hurricane and attendant flooding.
Nothing like misleading headlines to stir up unnecessary fear.

MSM wants to know: will African-Americans be disproportionately affected? You know the meme is already being developed.

I hope they stocked up on backup batteries!!
Fukishima would have gone down in history as a masterpiece of safe engineering if ONLY THEY HAD MORE THAN 6 HOURS WORTH OF BACKUP BATTERIES!
I have heard that they even sent someone to the store to buy some batteries, but their credit card was refused- that person should be beaten with a stick.
