House Speaker Paul Ryan on Saturday criticized President Donald Trump for pardoning a former Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio, becoming the highest-ranking Republican to object to the move.
The speaker does not agree with the decision, said Ryan spokesman Doug Andres. Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the United States. We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon.
The White House didnt immediately respond to a request for comment about Mr. Ryans statement.
On Friday, the White House announced that the president had pardoned Mr. Arpaio, known as an immigration hard-liner who had been sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years before he lost a re-election bid last year.
Mr. Arpaio, an early supporter of Mr. Trumps presidential campaign, was convicted last month for disobeying a 2011 federal court order to halt immigration raids. He was to be sentenced in October and faced up to six months in jail.
As sheriff he took aggressive measures to curb illegal immigration, including hunting people who crossed the border illegally in remote parts of his county, launching workplace raids and conducting traffic stops.
In a tweet Friday, the president described Mr. Arpaio as a patriot who kept Arizona safe.
A statement from the White House Friday said:
Throughout his time as sheriff, Arpaio continued his lifes work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our nation, he is a worthy candidate for a presidential pardon.
Mr. Arpaio didnt respond to a request for comment, but in several tweets after the pardon he thanked the president and his supporters, while also asking for donations to his legal fund.

33 POWs faced execution for treason after Vietnam until Nixon pardoned all POWs. McCain was on the list of the 33.
Dear, and alleged, Speaker Ryan.
Did not Sheriff Joe rate a JURY trial?
Hmmm?
A right twisted against an essential existential purpose of a land has become a wrong.
Not only that, Ryan referred to himself as speaker which gives the inpression that he’s speaking for the House of Representatives rather than just another gaping congressional @-hole with an opinion.
Paul, you can FOAD along with McAmnesty and Grahamnesty.

He Was Ordered [by the judge] Not to Enforce Federal Law
According to the more excitable opponents, pardoning Arpaio would be an endorsement by Trump of racism. This plays into the narrative of the left that Trump himself is a racist. One racist pardoning another is the way it is being framed.
But Arpaio wasnt criminally convicted for illegally using race in traffic stops. He was criminally convicted for turning illegal immigrants over to federal officials. And here things get messy.
Federal law explicitly authorizes local law enforcement to communicate with federal officials about the immigration status of those they encounter. State law requires local law enforcement to follow up on reasonable suspicion of illegal presence when practical to do so.
So, arguably, Snows order prohibited Arpaio from doing what federal law allows and state law mandates. When Trump said in Phoenix that Arpaio was convicted for doing his job, theres a basis for that point of view.
Would it have been so hard for him to say something positive? It’s almost like Ryan and his ilk know what the media want them to say and so tgey say it to get on TV.
Anything for the illegals, right RomneyRyan? Respect for the lawful authority of the President of the United States? No so much.
These inside the beltway morons are juggling live grenades by attacking Trump, and by definition the tens of millions of people who voted for him.
Are they trying to create a crisis where they will announce the have to compel Trump to resign because of the crisis they created?
Do they not understand if they were to pull that off 2018 would be a debacle, they would not just lose Congress, they would wiped out politically...I know I would not bother to even vote...and forget 2020...can you say President Kamala Harris?
ESAD Ryan. You ignorant, illegal loving, brain-dead, islam cowering POS.
I thought it unprofessional - whether he agreed or disagreed. He should have said, Pardons are the Presidents prerogative following certain guidelines.
Ryan should focus on the business of Congress since that is where his opinion is relevant.
Recall during the campaign Amensty Ryan and the rest of the beltway scum refused to help Trump defeat Hillary because they were “focused on Congress.”
Now that Trump did the heavy lifting defeating Hillary they are happy to stab him in the back all the time. The GOPe is disgusting beyond words. Trump has destroyed a generation of careerist scum like Ryan & McConnell. They won’t recover regardless of the outcome of the Trump admin.
Stupid jackwagons are worried about everyone’s job but their own.
Ok let me play the tinniest violin in the world for how some activist Judge’s order on immigration enforcement was overturned by the duly elected person who is actually supposed to have executive authority over immigration enforcement...in the wake of several improper rulings by judges to overturn his immigration policies.
Instead of criticizing Pres Trump, Mr Ryan should be conducting INTENSIVE investigation into Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s connection with the Awan family.
Ryan’s on the Clintonista payroll what else would he say?
He was elected Speaker by the other Congress critters, not the voters. He can be removed by them at will.
Start putting pressure on your representative to dump the chump.
Old saying.
Ryan couldn’t carry Arpaio’s jock.
You are a piece of pooh there ryan.
Somehow the system of court discipline has managed to evade this constitutional provision. Well, Donald has found the safety valve and I think he’ll set a new administrative precedent for using it. Governors too would be wise to take heed.
