therealdickgregory It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, DC. The family appreciates the outpouring of support and love and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time. More details will be released over the next few days - Christian Gregory

WHAT a story!
I remember the Hillside Strangler cousins (if I have my LA serial killers right) picked up a teen hitchhiking home from a club in Hollywood one night, and they were planning to put her through their usual torture, dismemberment, and recorded murder in the back of their van, but looked through her wallet first. There was a photo of Peter Lorre in there and they asked her why, and it was her grandfather. Boom, the lucky girl and her stuff were tossed out beside the road. Alive.
Gregory unsuccessfully ran for President of the United States in 1968 as a write-in candidate of the Freedom and Peace Party, which had broken off from the Peace and Freedom Party.

He was both funny and thought-provoking in 1970.
May he receive a merciful judgment and be freed from all traces of sin and sorrow. Rest in peace, brother.
Wow, what a great response & a mini history lesson to boot, thanks! I know my parents liked him.
When I was a young girl my father played Lenny Bruce’s “To is a preposition, come is a verb.” I had no clue, but in the back of my mind I knew it was dirty ; ) How could you not! Now as an adult I realize it was brilliant.
Again, thanks for the great reply.
Goodbye you race baiting POS!
Oooops
I remember hearing about him every time he went on a hunger strike.
Nice to know I wasn’t the only one. :)
What a shame he died being a fool!
yep
Yes, we are better off. There’s no telling how many minds he poisoned.
Thanks, doosee, for sharing.
Yes, you have DG nailed.
Did they happen only in black neighborhoods like Prince believed?
Yes, apparently so. That people would sit for that garbage was a real eye-opener.
I saw him at my school in the late 70s too. My roommate and I were just about the only whites in attendance. He gave a long rambling talk, excoriating Hollywood, and endorsing couple of local pols - black - who were under indictment. If he was ever a comedian, there was no evidence of it that evening.
If you haven’t seen the video in one of my posts you should - it’s only a few minutes - maybe it’s closer to 5-6.

Racist hater now roasting in Hell.
My introduction to Red Fox was around 1960 when I was 13 years old and a neighbor kid who was in my class had a copy of a Red Fox comedy album. One afternoon when it was too cold to shoot our rifles on our farm or ride mini-bikes we went to his garage where had had a hangout type den with a record player. Red’s “The Horse Race” was one of the funniest skits I ever heard.
