Philadelphia police arrested a 25-year-old Maplewood, N.J. man Wednesday after he was spotted throwing eggs at the Center City statue of former Mayor Frank Rizzo.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, fled from the scene after egging the statue outside the Municipal Services Building across from City Hall. He was caught and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, police said. The vandalism was captured by 6ABC cameras on the scene.
Authorities did not cite a motive. But particularly in the wake of the deadly Charlottesville protest, the statue has drawn new scrutiny of the former mayor and defenses of his record.
Egg was still on the statue at 11 a.m., as a few officers on bicycles mulled near it.

Anthony Rizzo is a damn fine first baseman, but he doesn’t deserve a statue yet.
I grew up just west of Philly. We are of German immigrant stock but my father had lots of Italian friends (some connected)and employed a bunch of them in his factory. I forget what year it was but there were black riots in the cities and the closest had just occurred in Newark and Philly was reported to be next in line. Rizzo was Chief of Police and addressed his cops with instructions that went something like “When you see a rioter holding a Molotov cocktail, draw your weapon. When you see him light it, cock your weapon. When you see him lifting his arm to throw it, shoot him.” As I recall, that word got out on the street and there wasn’t much action.
Damned WOP slave owner...
Frank Rizzo... wasn’t that the name of one of the Jerky Boys’ characters from back in the 90s?
Even I remember Rizzo-—and I’ve always lived in MA.
.
You’re being Statuephobic. You need to be more statue-tolerant. More statuesque.

They were trying to figure out how to piss up a statue in order to clean it.
Yep. He was going to bring his tools and work circles around you...
He was a Korean War era guy with the 4077th.
The private carting companies with the Italian names on the side of them were the only ones who collected garbage in Newark during the riots. They were all operated by armed men, and I don’t think any of them had any trouble at all.
If I remember correctly Rizzo was PC when a Black Mayor ordered tear gas be shot into a building occupied by some Black group whose last name was X or something like that.
Anyway, they had gasoline or gun powder or ammo that was in the house, it caught fire and caused IMMEDIATE urban renewal for about 10 square blocks.
Rizzo was very happy the Black Mayor took charge of the scene.
The commissioner was Sambor, not Rizzo. The mayor was Goode, and the year was 1985. The movement’s name was MOVE.
NO STATUES!!!!!
