DURHAM, N.C. A North Carolina Central University student was arrested Tuesday in connection with a Monday night protest in which a Confederate statue in front of Durham County's former courthouse was pulled down.
Takiyah Fatima Thompson, 22, was charged with participation in a riot ...
Thompson was given $10,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said Tuesday that his deputies were working to identify others involved in the incident and plan to pursue felony charges against them.
Some protest organizers defended their actions Tuesday, calling the monument a symbol of oppression and racism.
"I'm tired of white supremacy keeping its foot on my neck and the necks of people who look like me," Thompson said at a separate news conference. "That statue glorifies the conditions that oppressed people live in, and it had to go."
Thompson and several other protesters said they are part of the Durham chapter of the Workers World Party. According to their website, they are a "revolutionary socialist organization, engaging in struggles for the working class and the oppressed".
"We know that after Charlottesville and all of the racist incidents beforehand, all of the police killings, we are at war. This is war," said Loan Tran with the Workers World Party.
Sheriff: Public safety comes first Andrews called the protesters' actions "a blatant violation of the law," but he said no one was arrested during the demonstration because officials worried about injuries in the resulting chaos.
"Don't mistake restraint for inaction," he said. "Had I ordered my deputies to engage a hostile crowd, there would have been serious injuries. Statues can be replaced; lives cannot

Loan Tran? Black or another Asian trying to make believe they are oppressed. She says this is a war. Well then she’s going to find out how bad a War can be.
I'm surprised that tub o' lard could string that many multi-syllable words together in a sentence.
I wonder what will happen when they run out of statues.
I wonder if Takiyah means anything other than taqiyah. or it just sounded nice.
She's well fed.
Why is this not a hate crime?
We’ll be feeding and caring for this cow until..............!
“Foot on my neck...” .? Please. Drama much? Collecting benefits I wonder?
Its a misspelling of a drug they give OB/GYN patients in the hospital for treating infection of female anal hemorrhoids caused by diarrhea.
That neck needs TWO feet.
Just like that mural at Yale(?), too many black people when confronted with something of they do not approve resort to destroying it and vandalism.
Some protest organizers defended their actions Tuesday
"We get to decide whose property we can destroy."
The WWP is affiliated with Al-Awda, “the Palestinian Right to Return Coalition” via its connection to the International Action Center (IAC)
So, Takiyah, ready to exchange it for Islam which is even more oppressive?
I just checked wikipedia and the median household income of Vietnamese immigrants is higher than the US average. We’re talking about an immigrant group many of whom arrived here very poor and with zero language skills just a few decades ago.
I’ll bet this Tran character would be miffed if you pointed this apparent lack of oppression. She’s probably rebelling against patriotic, strongly anti-communist parents who appreciate America their adopted country.
