Organizers of an international robotics competition in the U.S. capital believe the disappearance of six teens from Burundi may have been "self-initiated."
As the competition was wrapping up Tuesday, their chaperone discovered his kids were missing. He looked in the college dorms where the six teens ages 16 to 18 had been staying. Their bags were packed and gone. Officers swept through DAR Constitution Hall. They were nowhere to be found.
Police now say that two of the six were seen crossing into Canada, and they don't suspect foul play with any of them.
A member of the Burundi-American community says he has little doubt the teens are seeking asylum, though he emphasized he had no direct knowledge of the situation.
Police in D.C. posted missing-person fliers Wednesday asking for help finding the teens, who had last been seen at the FIRST Global Challenge around the time of Tuesday's final matches.
Don Ingabire, 16, and Audrey Mwamikazi, 17, were later seen crossing into Canada, Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown said Thursday.
Marilu Cabrera, a spokeswoman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration services, which receives asylum applications, said the agency does not comment on whether specific individuals have sought asylum. Canadian immigration authorities also declined to comment.

Golly, ya think? Show of hands if you want to go back to Burundi ...
Nearby thread about limiting legal immigration to the US contains many comments about how very difficult it is to legally immigrate to Canada.
But, I guess if you are seeking political asylum, it might get a whole lot easier.
Apparently young people are bailing on Burundi en masse. This vanishing may have been planned for a while.
I wouldn’t want to visit a country where the people who live there don’t want to stay...................
From the headline I thought the young geniuses had figured out a way to get their robot to vanish.
Ah well, guess that advancement to science may have to wait for another generation. :-)
That eliminates virtually every other country beyond the US and maybe Canada. I have been to 50 countries and have not found one yet where people do not want to go to the US. We and our western civilization are successful magnet for the rest of the world. Build the wall.
“’self-initiated’ vanishing”
They’ll probably win the competition hands down - who else can make themselves disappear?
Don’t you just love the PC language of the left.
It would have been too “unfair” to say “teens escaped to Canada”.
Same.
LOL! You beat me to it.
Every country I’ve been to while I was in the military was filled with people not wanting to be there.
They didn’t want to go to just ANY OTHER country, mind you.
They wanted to go to America.
I don’t really care about these kids from Brundai
But i did see The Doobie Brothers at DAR Constitution Hall
In the early 70’s
Absolutely beautiful very old opera house
A couple blocks from our White House
I wouldn’t mind so much if they wanted to come here and be part of things and participate in what makes us the envy of the world. But they want to come here and turn this country into a clone of the very hell-hole from which they are supposedly escaping.
Not all immigrants, obviously, but some groups - certainly, most of the Muslim “immigrants” - see that as their goal.
Leaving aside that, however, I love the bureaucratic newspeak - “self-initiated.” Every day another bizarre officialism is added to the language.
I thought their advanced AI and robot caused the teens to vanish. Like The Philadelphia Experiment.
Years ago, I was part of an effort to receive a delegation of Russian youth who were coming to America (starting in East Tennessee) on a good will tour. Turns out they were actually from Tbilisi Georgia, not Russia proper. They were 17-19 years old.
Although they were flabbergasted by Walmart, Supermarkets and malls, they became defensive and declared they had good things at home.
Their trip was to be paid for by admission proceeds from ticket sales to their puppet shows. Their sponsors had a hard time finding a venue because the owners required payment up front or at least partial payment up front. Operating on a very frayed shoestring they lacked the cash and the American sponsors already heavily taxed were not willing to put up the cash. They finally arranged for the puppet performance in an old disused theater at the Mountain Home VA hospital. I went.
The show was a disaster. Not only was it bad but nobody except those of us helping out attended. They basically sold no tickets.
It was a very interesting experience. To me, it illustrated clearly the fact that the folks from the former Soviet Union were in bad economic shape. They were just plain ol poor.
but I digress......
One of the kids showed up in my office, 20 miles from where they were staying and asked for asylum. Well, what do you do? Here was a very scared kid that had seen the light and was damned if he was going back. Calls were made. The person with them from the State department made calls and there was a general row. People came and went. At last a man I did not know came and had a heart to heart discussion, very private, with the kid. He left and returned to his group and was very apologetic to me for the trouble he caused.
He had my card but never did write.
Epilogue:
In the overall scheme of things the puppets and the knock down stage and paraphernalia were very valuable to the Georgians. They lacked the funds to transport it all to somewhere in New Jersey from which it was all to be shipped home.
One soul declared they could bring it to his garage till means could be developed for the transport. Months later he called everybody that had anything to do with the events begging to get the stuff out of his garage. It was a mess. The US state department got involved, the Russian Embassy got involved and it drug on and on. I do not know how it turned out.
The lesson learned was that Americans have no taste for medieval puppet shows in 1992. the plan failed and the American tour ended in disaster in East Tennessee
Too bad for the Georgian youths. It’s still terribly poor there, now.
A group of children from an orphanage in Belarus was hosted by a local Baptist congregation this summer, and someone arranged for them to spend a day out at our Boy Scout camp. I ran the archery range for them, and everyone had a good time. The little girls all looked like Princess Elsa.
Very interesting story!....................
They are gone. They do NOT want to be found. Leave them alone.
“They are gone. They do NOT want to be found. Leave them alone.”
Too late... they found them.

Trump did say have skill and learn or know English.
Now—if they can make that robot disappear then I say we should take them. :-)
