The initiative, which will reportedly be overseen by a DOJ Civil Rights Division heavy with Trump-appointees, would be charged with hiring attorneys to explore “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions,” the Times reported.
The project’s reveal prompted immediate concern from civil rights advocates, with Kristen Clarke of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law calling the action “deeply disturbing.”
“It would be a dog whistle that could invite a lot of chaos and unnecessarily create hysteria among colleges and universities who may fear that the government may come down on them for their efforts to maintain diversity on their campuses,” Clarke told the Times.
This would mark only the latest disturbing reversal in how the federal government interprets civil rights law since Jeff Sessions became Attorney General. Last week, DOJ lawyers argued that federal civil rights law did not, in fact, apply to “discrimination based on sexual orientation.”

The discrimination against Asian-American applicants is rampant, too.
The more “selective” colleges maximize their acceptances of black and “Latino” applicants by under-admitting Asian and white applicants, relative to qualifications.
They try to cloud what they are doing by claiming they look at the “whole person” in an intricate evaluation process.... which just happens to disfavor white and Asian applicants, how interesting!

Well, it’s well past time to make universities defend their practice of discriminating against Asian students, who are as a group outstanding achievers and who are held back because they do too well. “It’s not fair” is no excuse for keeping those with better grades in high school from attending our leading universities because Blacks can’t make it otherwise. Diversity is no excuse for discrimination.

When I was in grad school, my program has 2 scholarships for which I could apply — the Minority Student scholarship and the Martin Luther King scholarship. I was flat-out told not to bother applying.
They need to take a hard look at civil service recruiting, hiring, and promoting also. Just sayin’
There is a story that, back in the 1960s, Governor Ronald Reagan moved to make the California State University system totally color-blind. Reagan was told: "If you do that -- if we only admit students based on pure merit -- then the university system will be almost entirely Asian."
Reagan replied: "So?"
