OAKLAND Officials in this fire-ravaged city reacted with alarm Monday over a report by this news organization that almost 80 percent of firefighter referrals to inspect dangerous conditions went ignored over the last six years.
It is horrifying, Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan said of the investigations findings. In fact, one of the issues (the story) identified is how it gets decided who gets inspected.
In January, a month after the Ghost Ship warehouse fire killed 36 people, Kaplan proposed reprioritizing which businesses get inspected.

Burn Oakland to the ground
In Philly they claim ignorance why the torture, abuse, murder, and conditions under Gosnell were not reported by inspectors.
It was deliberate willful neglect.
Taken to the next logical step, who was paying who not to inspect.
This is what you get when you put a swarm of STD-carrying, aimless, shiftless, narcissistic, dead-end genetic defects packed together in an urban cesspool like so many ants. I’ll stick with my acre and a quarter surrounded by hundred foot pines, and put up with the coyotes chasing the rabbits and the deer munching on my tomatoes, TYVM.
Ditto my land in the NM mountains and the 500 acre ranch/shooting range I work at.

The real reason for the problems at OFD is the female affirmative action hire Fire Chief. She’s a disaster, but she’s the “right color” for the job and that’s all that matters. Huh? Looks like she’s retired. Check out her “deal.”

But wait a minute. What happened to all those CA regulations that should have prevented the fires? I’m sure every building in CA is smoke-free, asbestos-free, lead paint-free, pet-free, and has to have a sprinkler system powered by hamsters on wheels.
Agreed. I sold my ‘little’ farm last year (2 acres) and moved to our ‘big’ farm (160 acres) at the end of a Dead End road.
We’re only ONE county over, but we’re in a whole ‘nother world outside of Dane County with, ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ as it’s ‘Colossal Crown Jewel of Socialism.’
Crime is spiking; they’re not doing much about it other than holding hands and singing and holding candlelight vigils and blaming EVERYONE but themselves for the miscreants they’ve INVITED IN from Chicagostan and The Twin Cities.
They can have it! Buh-Bye!
Too bad I’m in AL and you’re in NM. My new AR would love to make friends with your shooting range.
My dad God rest his soul anytime he saw a black person on the news talking about a fire He would say OMG look how horribly burned that one is
Most of these dysfunctional cities are ruled by Dems and their insider political elite cronies who thrive and get rich on government corruption and incompetence.
If I could have a do-over, I’d live on acreage, prolly in the hills or mountains. Instead, I’ve spent my life visiting such nice places.
Oakland is a sewer, a cesspool, a human garbage dump, the seventh circle of Hell, a congeries of dung beetles, home of many Luddite generations, smellier than Mosul. And I should know, I was born there. And left. Thank God!
Privatize the inspections.
1. require fire insurance.
2. have fire department notices of a needed inspection sent to the insurer of record. if it comes back as no longer the insurer for the property, send a notice to the owner that the CO will be cancelled in x days unless the new insurer is identified. repeat until proper insurer is notified.
3. have the insurer hire private inspectors, and work with the owner to get the inspection(s) and any needed repairs done. accept the verdict(s) of those inspectors. allow insurers to cancel the insurance if the owner does not rectify a situation to their satisfaction. require the insurer to notify the city of a cancelled policy.
4. cancel the CO if there is no fire insurance.
Between the owners and the insurers the inspections will get done or the properties closed due to cancelled COs.

I’m no fan of Teresa Deloach Reed, nor the kind of filth that hired her, but this is not a city responsibility.
Its not the job of the city to make the world safe. It is the job of the land lords chiefly, but also the individual tenants.
Government is not supposed to be our Fairy Godmother.

You’re obviously a big Gov kind of guy.
When the kind of tyranny that you advocate gets its foot in the door, it grows and grows until it consumes everything.
Personal responsibility has to rule the day.
.
Still making money off his tragedy that the city set up?
...........I suspect massive cash payoffs (bribes) to Fire Inspectors is the next shoe to drop.
Turning it over to the owner and insurers IS about “personal responsibility”. Do you get your car registration without car insurance?
I am in favor of many other aspects of “local city housing permitting” stuff being turned over to the insurers, and out of the hands of petty bureaucrats. If the insurer is happy that what the owner is doing is not contrary to the insurer’s risk standards, that’s should be 100% all that is required. The rest is petty local nonsense.
