Wow! When you said pip, I expected to see a tiny one. That lil owlet is almost out! Might BE out now but Didi is sitting and I can’t see.

I see Jasper brought a couple of nice rats for Didi and the new behbeh. Good daddy.

Ah, she just got up and stepped outside. Looks like the wee one has hatched completely.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

SHALL WE DANCE

FRED ASTAIRE & GINGER ROGERS: “LET’S CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF”

A stylized version of Manhattan’s Central Park was created on an RKO sound stage, and every note you hear in this clip from the 1937 film was written by Gershwin himself. It was Ginger who came up with the idea of a dance routine on roller skates, and Fred thought it was ridiculous. But choreographer Hermes Pan and producer Pandro Berman thought it was brilliant, and it played beautifully despite Fred’s misgivings.

The song is about class differences in America, and it confused moviegoers who were not American.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

SHALL WE DANCE

BILLIE HOLIDAY: “LET’S CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF”

This is early Lady Day with a restrained Dixieland backing that doesn’t get in the way of her voice. That’s a great sax solo in the middle.

Billie Holiday: “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” (1937)

Billie rethought the song twenty years later with some of the most noted jazz sideman in the game. Just look at the names who were present at this L.A. recording session!

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

SHALL WE DANCE

ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG: “LET’S CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF”

Ella and Satchmo went into the studio in 1957 for this duet. Louis’ vocal style is unique and incredibly inelegant, but he’s wonderful in this recording. Ella is wonderful as usual.

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong: “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off”

This is Ella from 1959 backed by Nelson Riddle, a Big Band approach.
