THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

SHALL WE DANCE

FRED ASTAIRE & GINGER ROGERS: “LET’S CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF”

A stylized version of Manhattan’s Central Park was created on an RKO sound stage, and every note you hear in this clip from the 1937 film was written by Gershwin himself. It was Ginger who came up with the idea of a dance routine on roller skates, and Fred thought it was ridiculous. But choreographer Hermes Pan and producer Pandro Berman thought it was brilliant, and it played beautifully despite Fred’s misgivings.

The song is about class differences in America, and it confused moviegoers who were not American.
