Vladimir Putin hailed a fresh start in the badly battered US-Russia relationship, after a first meeting with Donald Trump at the G20 summit, which he said had set the scene for a new era of closer co-operation between Moscow and Washington.

Mr Putin praised the US president, saying the “real Trump is completely different from the TV Trump” and describing him as “sane” and “concrete” in his responses.

“If we can build a relationship along the lines of our conversation yesterday, then there is every reason to believe we can restore, at least to a certain degree, the level of co-operation we need,” he told reporters after the conclusion of the summit.

US-Russia relations plumbed new lows under Barack Obama, amid US anger over Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its support for Russian-speaking separatists in eastern Ukraine, as well as its armed intervention to bolster Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

But they deteriorated even further after US intelligence concluded that the Kremlin was behind last year’s cyber attacks on the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Russia will pursue Russia's national interests, and the United States under Trump will pursue American interests. There is no intrinsic reason why the two should be antagonistic. Competitors to be sure, rivals, but each nation benefits from a stable, relatively peaceful international scene.

“Putin praises Trump and hails new era of co-operation”

I’m sorry, but I’m starting to believe this collusion crap - there is simply NO WAY that Putin could know how to explode the heads of Leftists in this country without Trump giving him at least some advice.

This is JUST TOO GOOD!

Principled realism.

Why is that so hard for so many people to get?

The only ones wanting to keep open the Russia Election issues are the demorats....and they aren’t finished yet pounding that drum.

But for Trump and Putin they have a slim chance of at least co-operating on what’s possible to do so. Proof is if this cease fire holds in Southern Syria.....it’s a win for both leaders they agreed to this...

I found it very interesting that neither Trump nor Putin wanted to stop their discussions even after it went way past the 30 minute’s intially planned for....then another hour and finally over two hours.

IMO you have two leaders wanting to make deals but at the same time both understand neither Russia nor the US keeps these for very long.....one or the other always breaks them, or other meddling parties make sure things don’t happen .... But for now this is a good start.

Watch out for Turkey to create chaos....Erdogan would love nothing more than Russia and Us to go to war...and to fail any reasonable cease fire.

Not surprised Putin said the TV Trump is not the same in person......everyone says that after meeting him in person when it’s about dealing and resolving problems.....except Gop Rhinos and the anti-Trump crowd.

Oh please. You think Putin isn’t aware of the media meltdown in this country? Poland’s President even tweeted about it. Trump is working these people.

Love your 2nd paragraph. Let’s hope these 2 leaders can find ways to agree to agree on some things, agree to disagree on other things, and therefore keep the ICBM’s in the silos on both sides.

We are going to have to accept that Russia wants access to their port in Crimea, and don’t want to be ringed with our military bases (same as we don’t want theirs around us). Maybe let’s start thinking about how exceptional our Constitution is, how exceptional our republican form of government is, yet how disastrously unexceptional our interventionist foreign policy has been for a long time.

I dunno. Politicians seem only to view the world in zero sum terms. Trump wrote that a good deal has to be good for everyone involved. Idiots in the State Department never seem to get it.
