Ivanka Trump makes her case for national paid family leave program

First daughter Ivanka Trump penned an op-ed Tuesday, making her case why paid family leave is an important policy that benefits American women as well as the economy.

"Providing a national guaranteed paid-leave program — with a reasonable time limit and benefit cap — isn’t an entitlement, it’s an investment in America’s working families,” Trump wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

ADVERTISEMENT She laid out the benefits from such a program, saying it will lead to "Healthier children and parents in more tightly bonded families, greater financial stability and stronger attachment to the labor force are among the most important.”

But she argued that such programs are not reaching "the poorest, most vulnerable workers in our society ..."

Ivanka Trump, who serves as a senior adviser to President Trump, said her father's 2018 budget proposal highlights the importance of such a policy.

“The policy outlined in the administration’s recent budget proposal emphasizes the need for mothers and fathers to have access to paid leave to encourage both parents to share parenting responsibilities and to strive toward minimizing hiring biases,” she writes.

The president's budget proposal includes six weeks of paid leave for families after the birth or adoption of a child.

Ivanka Trump goes on to say “government benefits should not be a substitute for private-sector investment,” arguing that paid leave on a national scale requires participation and efforts from “private sector companies and state governments.”

Daddy needs to send his daughter home to run her fashion business. She is not being helpful.

"God is warning us. If we don’t embrace sacred liberality then secular liberalism will fill the void."

That's what I thought you meant but wasn't sure. Good for having faith, but you are clueless about what the Creator of the universe wants on this rock. If you extrapolate God's wishes to its finality, then you get one gigantic commune on Earth. Ever been to a commune? I have back in the 60's. They fall apart because of the human characteristics that God gave us. You really think that God cares about socioeconomics? He doesn't have better things to do?

Believe what you will, but I know what the best economic system is for a free people on planet Earth. It's not about equal outcome, but equal opportunity...succeed or fail. Our discussion is ended. Have the last say if you must.

You were reaping benefits from the gubmint-induced inefficiencies. Nothing to brag about, but it may have been beneficial to your finances at the expense of the company’s.

That's why I'm against the Feds or States requiring it. In my case, which I admit is rare, the employer was a community-building capitalist, and provided paid maternity leave even though it wasn't required. From what I heard from the people I worked with, the maternity rate there was lower than average. (small sample group) I can tell you the way he ran the business made for very happy employees who loved him.

I don't think that's the case at all. European birth rates, for example, are at or near historical lows -- and most of those countries have had some form of paid family leave policy in place for decades.

If you track down any published materials and research papers on the subject, you'll typically find that "gender equality" and other nonsense associated with the "capability approach" economic theory are the driving forces behind it. In effect, the main purpose of the paid family leave is to eliminate any semblance of a disadvantage in the workplace for women with children.

It's no coincidence that the countries in the world with the highest birthrates probably can't even translate the term "paid family leave" into their native languages.

If employers/owners/shareholders give these benefits, without the gubmint twisting their arms, then go for it. It is their money. But the moment the gubmint creates a mandate, it becomes extortion.

The ultimate commune will be heaven itself. Nobody sins. All filled with God’s love.

But YOU are clueless in committing to the fallacy of the excluded middle. Don’t disinvite God then blame the result on anything else but what you did!!

Ivanka Trump is constitutionally stoooopid.

Same thing for all the people that think that we should have a national healthcare program.

The power of a “national guaranteed paid-leave program” is not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, therefore a “guaranteed paid-leave program” is reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. [Amendment 10]

Raising a family is a HUGE responsibility. If you need free money to raise your own family (and paid family leave IS free money guaranteed by the force of the gubmint), then you should not be raising a family in the first place. Individual responsibility is the key.

There is a happy mean between It Takes A Village and Rugged Individualist but it truly takes a robust faith in the very real Lord to stay there.

Without saying I agree or disagree with your view, I will say others should view your idea as the choice facing a battlefield commander. Do I fight to the last man, or sacrifice some to guard a retreat. You have to live to fight another day.

The income tax code creates many jobs for accountants, tax planners, and lawyers. It’s a big reason it will take an absolute upheaval to change things. These facts do not mean that the income tax is not immoral and intrusive to say the least.

Months and months ago, I believe I was the first here to post that the President made a big mistake in appointing the Kushners as inner circle advisors.

Boy, did I take the heat on that thread...from pro-Trumpers, already yet ! I became an anti-Trumper overnight.

I had posted that it was nothing personal, but that the liberal Democrat couple would be the bad-news gift that keeps giving. Nepotism is always bad optics, as well-intentioned as it may be.

And, guess what....they ARE the gift that keeps giving and giving.....in a variety of ways.

Some of us knew the Kushners' appointment would be an ongoing lightning rod....hurting the man we so much support. So, as the saying goes, I called it a mistake more in sorrow than in anger.

If Ivanka's and Jared's advice is so important to Trump, they can give it to him over the dinner table.

P.S.....I don't see any high-fives for Ivanka on THIS thread.

This isn’t a policy I like but on a scale of one to ten this is a two. And overall, I see VERY little Ivanka influence on DT.

Will be at WH with Team Trump on 8/5 to discuss things.

Oh, surprise: Bannon is still there.

I'm happy you'll be seeing some Trump people next month. You can relay to them the reaction of the President's conservative base to liberal Democrat Ivanka's toe-dipping into socialist waters as expressed over and over on this thread.

She’s an idiot.

This is all to rationalize her outsourcing her own parenting.

There is nothing more important for a child to become his best self than to have access to his own (loving) parent most of the day when he is growing up.

Economically this means solving the problem of middle class people being able to achieve decent paying jobs. So that one breadwinner can support the other parent and the children. THIS will solidify America’s greatness, based on a wise, independent people. Today, both parents are working, stressed, and still not making ends meet. THAT is our problem.

Ivanka, there is no source of money to be handed out for cheap substitute parenting. And you chose self aggrandizement over time with your own kids. The more you push it, the less right it seems.

Also, bottom line is that the first 6 weeks of life could be done greatly by a nanny while the parent works. What is the point in staying home for 6 weeks when the baby will be sleeping or crying or eating?

What is essential is to be home with the child from 3 months to 5 years. Those six weeks hurt employers but don’t help the baby much.

Part of her proposal is allowing couples making up to $500,000 a year to deduct child care expenses. I’m sure in that in her world that qualifies as lower middle class.

That is insane.

Is Ivanka building her platform to run in 2020 as a Dem candidate for POTUS?

Six weeks of paid leave (30 days)? That’s about what most employees get for three years in paid vacation!

Most employers aren’t going to let a job go vacant for 6 weeks!
