First daughter Ivanka Trump penned an op-ed Tuesday, making her case why paid family leave is an important policy that benefits American women as well as the economy.
"Providing a national guaranteed paid-leave program with a reasonable time limit and benefit cap isnt an entitlement, its an investment in Americas working families, Trump wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.
ADVERTISEMENT She laid out the benefits from such a program, saying it will lead to "Healthier children and parents in more tightly bonded families, greater financial stability and stronger attachment to the labor force are among the most important.
But she argued that such programs are not reaching "the poorest, most vulnerable workers in our society ..."
Ivanka Trump, who serves as a senior adviser to President Trump, said her father's 2018 budget proposal highlights the importance of such a policy.
The policy outlined in the administrations recent budget proposal emphasizes the need for mothers and fathers to have access to paid leave to encourage both parents to share parenting responsibilities and to strive toward minimizing hiring biases, she writes.
The president's budget proposal includes six weeks of paid leave for families after the birth or adoption of a child.
Ivanka Trump goes on to say government benefits should not be a substitute for private-sector investment, arguing that paid leave on a national scale requires participation and efforts from private sector companies and state governments.

The last chapter of Proverbs is helpful. The busy mom still has a side business on. Let’s onshore again. H1B should be for another Werner Von Braun. Not for Indians that are practically flogged into it.
I say make it easier for women and men to work remotely part time.
1. Increase the tax exemption for each child.
2. Increase the standard deduction for any person who filed a tax return with one or more dependents under the age of 18.
3. Allow parents to file amended tax returns retroactively to let them claim the exemption for up to five years before a child is reported on their tax return. This would effectively allow the parents to recover taxes they had previously paid, thereby making up for a loss of income while the child is very young.
This would probably be much more effective than another stupid program funded by taxpayers or employers.
“And yet still amenable to charitable cooperation. Oh you have children? I dont. So please do see what works best for all. I will bless your children; now please also bless me.”
That might work in some fantasy world but it would not have worked in my office. They took their infantcare month off. Period.
.
I do think that Daddy is letting her run with this as a lesson. Bill did the same thing with Hillary, letting her play with that thought.
I hate the thought that employers would have to pay for absent employees, and that employees could earn that absence via a pregnancy. Not the reason to have kids, and not the way to give them a good start.
Eventually, Congress needs to say NO Way Jose!
Not so fantasy when God is widely feared.
“You werent elected, lady.”
Exactly, which is why you needn’t worry about what she writes in an op ed piece.
It’s no coincidence that the countries in the world with the most generous “paid family leave” programs also have the lowest birthrates. That sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true.
That’s an excellent observation.
And a poor idea may be close to an excellent one. If we stifled talk of everything that was impractical per se, we might lose chances to realize better things. Knee jerking is no better on left or right.
And fire trucks are often close to fires... Ban fire trucks. ...
Jared K should be in jail. Trump needs to keep J & I far away from the WH. These two are Rats in conservative clothing.
Go away
What crime accuseth thou?
In defense of EMPLOYER provided leave, my entry-level position was the floater that went from department to department assisting until the girls on leave came back, or until they hired a replacement for the ones that decided not to. The fact that the employer didn’t know if they were coming back or not provided me with a job.
lol
I think a national Corvette, Shelby Mustang and supercharged Camaro with taxes and insurance paid would be a great program!
Yeah, and I’m gonna need my gov’t paid daily Chik-fil-A, too.
Now, let’s talk about guitars.......
So what is the time limit and what is the benefit cap?
"Healthier children and parents in more tightly bonded families, greater financial stability and stronger attachment to the labor force are among the most important."
Exactly how does this mandate make for healthier children, and how does it bond families when so many have fathers that just walk away?
But she argued that such programs are not reaching "the poorest, most vulnerable workers in our society ..."
And so the smallest to the largest employer has to pay for them? Have those "poor" ever heard of family baby-sitters?
"The policy ... emphasizes the need for mothers and fathers to have access to paid leave to encourage both parents to share parenting responsibilities and to strive toward minimizing hiring biases, she writes."
I'm simply amazed that someone who ran The Apprentice with all the tasks assigned to the contestants doesn't realize that SMALL business employs the majority of jobs. Those States that implemented such double pay (leave&temps) on small employers have either left that State or shut their doors. Again, aghast that of all women, she would think this could work without job loss.
Ivanka, you will never get rid of hiring biases. It's how a free market society works from experience construction workers to strippers. Personally, if I still had a company, I wouldn't hire anyone with a liberal arts degree in Women, Black, Minority, or other basket-weaving useless degrees. You are not the woman I thought you were. Go away.
Just a paid family leave is not enough with more mouths to feed. Why not give an extra $50K per year AND a fully paid 18 year family leave.
What a shame that we can’t think beyond the stereotyped lefty/righty divide with great gulf fixed.
“I could see baby factories getting jobs for a short while and then reaping the benefits after putting out another baby. Welfare recipients shouldnt be encouraged to make more babies.”
Precisely. There should be a reverse family paid leave. If you can’t afford to have family AND have kids, the kids need to be sent to more responsible parents that can afford to take care of their kids.
“The fact that the employer didnt know if they were coming back or not provided me with a job.”
You were reaping benefits from the gubmint-induced inefficiencies. Nothing to brag about, but it may have been beneficial to your finances at the expense of the company’s.
