HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two additional medical marijuana dispensaries -- one on Oahu, the other on Kauai were recently given the green light by the state Health Department to begin cultivating cannabis, even though the labs needed to test marijuana products still have not been certified to begin doing so.
The announcement brings what's expected to be an even bigger workload for employees from the three independent testing facilities, who have not even begun to approve any of the cannabis that's already been harvested.
The continued delays have one pain specialist concerned for a very specific reason: He says one of his patients died waiting for relief that can only come in the form of medical-grade cannabis.
Paul Klink is the founder of the Honolulu Wellness Center on Oahu -- and a certified medical cannabis consultant. His clinic offers non-synthetic solutions to medical conditions, including the use of medical-grade marijuana.
For one of his patients, Klink said, the wait for the cannabis was too long.
"I don't know why I still get emotional over this, but I can tell you his first name was Peter," Klink said. "He had cancer, very bad. Came in (to the clinic) in a wheelchair. Just sitting down, talking about the medicine, he was smiling."
Even though Peter was terminally ill, Klink said, he refused to take marijuana that wasn't tested for impurities and ended up dying while waiting for the drug to become legally available.
Klink said Peter was just one of his many patients who refuse to break the law by turning to the black market even if it would mean relief.
"Most of the people can't afford the space or the time, or are too sick to grow it, and they need to go to the dispensary," Klink said....

“Yet exactly that was acheived with the variety of benzodiapines, which is the only thing that gives me relief...between benzos and cannabis for the ten years or so I probably have left, give me cannabis, if it works...”
I took Ativan for almost 10 years. It was great for panic attacks & not much else for me. Thankfully, I was able to titrate off Ativan & haven’t had any since August 1, 2016. I’m really thankful I could do that as I have read some horror stories about folks who stayed on bento’s for too long. I also refused to operate a vehicle while on Ativan because I didn’t feel like it was safe to do so.
Take the time to research the issue of taking Ativan for more than 5 years & the debilitating effects of such use if you haven’t already.
As with anything else, YMMV :)
Thanks for the clarification.
“Youre relying upon the effects of recreational use for relief of anxiety much as someone who drinks alcohol.”
Actually I use cannabis ONLY because it successfully treats depression & anxiety plus all the goodies that come along with both for ME. Prior to Feb 2015 I was not a cannabis user of any kind on any level.
“Very regular use in my experience, not heavy but daily, leads to tolerance and the need to consume more to achieve the desired effect(s).”
This can be true if you are not careful in how you use cannabis. I’ve found I can maintain a level tolerance if I juggle the ways I ingest or inhale cannabis. One day I might eat an edible in the early evening & vape before bedtime. The next day I might smoke in the lat afternoon & vape right before bedtime. It’s important to me to keep my tolerance low as I can’t afford to buy larger quantities of cannabis than what I currently use.

my opinion is this; if one is taking a benzo during daylight hours, in order to get through the day, that is abuse; I have never done so, nor have I ever driven while taking; it is a bedtime thing exclusively...I take it expressely for it’s value as a tension relaxant, and am fully cognizant of it’s diminishing value if used too much...I am almost 70 years of age; if I continue much longer suffering from insomnia I predict a stroke within a few years; if benzos foul me up over a ten year period, when I’m pushing 80, then so be it...but you are right, and I attempt to use a sedating dosage (2 mg or so)of it no more than twice, or thrice (if I’m really stressed) a week...
‘it’s you who has stated that you’re looking for such to the point of considering using marijuana again’
yes, I have stipulated that; but only if it has proven efficacy for that which I seek...anxiety attacks, driven by insomnia...
‘it’s curious to me that you’re attempting to turn this around in such a manner.’
I’m confused...what am I trying to turn around...?
Very sorry you have the issues with anxiety and insomnia. I some very bad years don’t with both. I think if you can get indica specific to capsules you can get to sleep easier & stay asleep longer. I pray it works as well for you as it has for me.
Sorry for the poorly type response to ya. I’m not very good at typing on this tablet yet.
