Shortly after takeoff this week, a small plane experienced engine problems and was forced to crash into a busy stretch of Californias 405 freeway.

A fireball like that and they survived. That is a miracle.
Fact: The 405 got its name because once you get on it, you’re going to be on it for 4 or 5 hours. First hand experience.
Just two aboard. The 310 can fly well with one engine out, esp. lightly loaded. Crash video shows a stall. Strange.
At the body shop: “ got bumped by a plane.”
I remember the 405 landing when it first came out. A real demonstration of homebrewed CGI
I was told that a pilot is trained that he is responsible for anyone he kills in a crash landing. Being a small plane there could not have been many passengers.
If he saw a safety window — then great for him.
Otherwise, he should have risked himself and his passengers in a more dangerous landing that had less/no traffic.
Yep, definitely pancaked in. Amazing no cars were involved, the 405 is nearly always jammed to the brim.
Preceded by a tight base to final turn.
Likely cause: accelerated stall due to low speed with high angle turn and inadequate altitude to recover (he probably pitched up as well in fear instead of attempting a recovery).
310's are especially unforgiving on that. Highly loaded wing and he probably didn't have full flaps.
You DON'T get low and slow in a 310 and start doing wild maneuvers.

People will die!
Indeed.
L.A. Freeway (Live (New Orleans))
Jerry Jeff Walker
Pack up all your dishes
Make note of all good wishes
Say goodbye to the landlord for me
That sum-bitch has always bored me
Throw out them old LA papers
And that moldy box of vanilla wafers
Adios to all this concrete
Gonna get me some dirt road back street
[Chorus]
If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway
Without getting killed or caught
Down that road in a cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain’t bought bought bought
If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway
Here’s to you old skinny Dennis
Only one I think I will miss
I can hear your Bassman singin’
Sweet and low like a gift your bringin’
Play it for me one more time now
Got to give it all we can now
I believe everything your saying
Just keep on keep on playing
[Chorus]
Put the pink slip in the mailbox
Leave the key in the old front door lock
They will find it likely as not
With all the things that we have forgot
Oh Susanna now don’t you cry, babe
Love’s a gift that’s surely handmade
We’ve got something to believe in
Before you know it’s time we’re leavin’
[Chorus]

Dudette, you just get out of bed? ...
I worked with a woman who was in a car with her mother near the Fullerton (CA) airport years ago and they got hit by a Ford Tri-motor that was doing a test flight after some mechanical work and had some engine troubles. She and her mother had some minor injuries from the collision but everyone survived.
...if so, guess he's lucky he didn't lawn-dart.
“Amazing no cars were involved”
Some of the reasons when a small aircraft is going down in a highly populated area they will look for a freeway to set it down are they will take advantage of the wide, straight road and try to stay up long enough to get the drivers to see them above them, panic, and break giving them room.
Better chance there of not hitting someone with the lane dividers between oncoming and outgoing traffic, multi lanes, no crosswalks, or beside the road pedestrians. Definitely beats trying to set it down on small road surrounded by houses, schools, or playing kids.
Forced landings are very often a crap shoot at best.

Yeah, your mom woke me up complaining about her EBT card getting cancelled.
