In a rare display of media self-awareness, New York Times investigative reporter Eric Lipton called out CNN coverage of the nationally-covered special election in Georgias sixth congressional district. Criticizing their journalistic standards, Lipton tweeted a June 10 article from CNN citing a poll estimating a seven point lead for the Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff over his Republican opponent Karen Handel. "Looks like we have more evidence that polling is flawed and reporters need to stop relying on it to shape coverage," Lipton tweeted on June 21.

Headline: “Pot Meets Kettle”
“”Looks like we have more evidence that polling is flawed and reporters need to stop relying on it to shape coverage”
I would have preferred that he say “reporters need to stop shaping coverage”, but, unfortunately, that’s what they’re getting paid to do.
Misleading headline. The tweet says nothing about any CNN biased coverage.
Fake newspaper calls fake news network faker than they are.................
Nice. But he’s got it backwards.
Polling exists to shape public opinion. There is no effort to find out how people are likely to vote. The polls encourage the public to vote “correctly” by backing the “sure winner”.
Likewise, reporting is no longer about informing the public about events in the world. Reporting is also about shaping public opinion, getting the public to think “correctly” about events they are told about.
NYT implies that reporters use polls to shape their coverage. I really don’t think that’s how this stuff works at all. They get memos from the DNC. That shapes their coverage.
Yes, Mr. Lipton. We call this #fakenews
It isn’t the coverage they’re trying to shape, they’re trying to shape the outcome.
“CNN citing a poll estimating a seven point lead for the Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff over his Republican opponent Karen Handel. “
Deja Vu all over again.
Fake news carpetbaggers calling out fake news carpetbaggers. What a funny world we live in! LOL
The CNN reporter should read his own companies online report about the senate health bill. Chuck Schumer would have written something less partisan.
Maybe the poll was right.
Maybe Trump and Sessions worked with the Russians to ‘hack’ this special election.
We saw the same thing with Hillary, CNN’s unbiased polls all showed her with double digit leads in the swing states.
Maybe Special Counsel Robert Mueller needs to add this to his list.
Not sure NYT has much of a leg to stand on.
On election night, their results were VERY slow. They typically were several thousand votes behind Decision Desk HQ. At some points, their updates ceased for an hour or more.
Like the November election, they seemed to be waiting/hoping/hunting for an increase in Dem votes — that did not happen.
NYT criticizing CNN is like Pot — Kettle.
20 minutes before it was called for the Republican, Tapper, with supporting graphic, was explaining why the Democrat was winning. That’s the most blatant lie I’ve seen from them yet.
