YOKOSUKA, Japan -- A number of Sailors that were missing from the collision between USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and a merchant ship have been found. As search and rescue crews gained access to the spaces that were damaged during the collision this morning, the missing Sailors were located in the flooded berthing compartments. They are currently being transferred to Naval Hospital Yokosuka where they will be identified. The families are being notified and being provided the support they need during this difficult time. The names of the Sailors will be released after all notifications are made.

ACX Crystal AIS track (YouTube)
https://youtu.be/4N1-_9SGQTI
The video includes a running chronometer at the bottom.
What I found interesting is that according to the initial AP news report the ACX Crystal did not radio in the collision until 16:20, by which time (according to the chronometer) it had already left the scene.

That has got to be one of the worst ways to go. And judging from the course of the Crystal, stupidity may have been the cause.

Seafaring is a dangerous occupation. That goes doubly for Naval personnel. More Sailors were lost at Guadalcanal than Marines. Those “safe” ships can become deathtraps in a heartbeat. Prayers to the families.

With all the technology navy ships have, how can this happen?
Yes, and just as importantly, what does it say about the preparedness of today's Navy? Could 250 container ships wreck it?

Covert cargo transfer attempt gone awry?

I doubt the a container ship’s steering could respond in any fashion quickly enough to hit an alert Destroyer.

Why would a ship do that?
Was somebody trying to block its course?

Can someone familiar with container ships explain the two weird u-turns the container ship is reported to have made?
I know next to nothing about container ships - but the little I know suggests that they do not usually maneuver like this.
Could it be a deliberate effort to take out one of our destroyers? Inquiring minds are definitely curious about this, and no longer trusts the MSM to report the truth.

The US navy ship was clearly not alert or on guard.
