Isolating Trump: Merkel's G-20 Climate Alliance Is Crumbling

The German chancellor had been hoping to isolate Donald Trump on climate issues at the upcoming G-20 summit in Hamburg. But Merkel’s hoped-for alliance is crumbling, underscoring Germany’s relative political weakness globally. Many countries are wary of angering the United States.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel had actually thought that Canada’s young, charismatic prime minister, Justin Trudeau, could be counted among her reliable partners. Particularly when it came to climate policy. Just two weeks ago, at the G-7 summit in Sicily, he had thrown his support behind Germany. When Merkel took a confrontational approach to U.S. President Donald Trump, Trudeau was at her side. But by Tuesday evening, things had changed. At 8 p.m., Merkel called Trudeau to talk about how to proceed following Trump’s announced withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. To her surprise, the Canadian prime minister was no longer on the attack. He had switched to appeasement instead. […]

The first cracks began appearing on the Thursday before last. After returning from the G-7 summit in the Sicilian town of Taormina, Merkel had sent a clear signal to her team: “We have to stay together; we have to close ranks.” […]

Suddenly, though, Britain and Japan no longer wanted to be part of it. British Prime Minister Theresa May didn’t want to damage relations with Trump, since she would need him in the event of a hard Brexit, the Chancellery surmised last week. And given the tensions with North Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe couldn’t put his country’s alliance with the U.S. at risk. In other words: Climate policy is great, but when it comes to national interests, it is secondary. …

More from the article:

The German chancellor may have become the hero of liberals and democrats around the globe, but she is unable to fulfill the expectations placed on her as the putative "leader of the free world," at least not when it comes to power politics. Even Merkel's psychological deftness in dealing with the posturing potentates of the world isn't enough to make up for the fact that Germany is not a global power when it comes to foreign and security policy.

America, it seems, will remain the world's power broker for the time being.

They all act like they are entitled to our tax money, entitled to enter our country, entitled to our jobs, entitled to deals and treaties that benefit them e.t.c.

To see his domestic success so far takes my awe and makes it veneration.

Could kindly provide me with some examples of what you believe to be his domestic success? I am serious, I want to check notes with other like-minded people...

Why in hell would a German Chancellor think she gets to run the world?

Commies aren't used to being told no.

.....”They all act like they are entitled to our tax money, entitled to enter our country, entitled to our jobs, entitled to deals and treaties that benefit them e.t.c”.......

Remember Merkel’s response was....”We’re on our own”.....which Trump never said.....but she really knew was ‘her leadership’ over the EU, and this with the help of the Obama Administration and their shared agenda for the world....was over...and Trump was assuming Leadership on behalf of the US.

This is ALL power struggles now throughout the International
Community.....Trump threw a rachet in the pot and they’re all shook up for it. And that’s a good thing!

When it comes to confronting the United States, a superpower with 10 carrier groups - not just carriers, an air force second-to-none, a reputation for blindsiding the enemy with secret technology, a reputation for disruptive tactics, and the world’s largest economy, it just doesn’t make sense to piss us off for a grifter’s fairytale.

Merkel is pathetic. I cannot believe anyone looks at her and sees a good leader.

Merkel the Mutt looks like the neighborhood spinster who cooks crappy cakes for the bake sale that nobody wants to eat.

....”America, it seems, will remain the world's power broker for the time being”......

Well I think that's now being determined as the International Leaders decide who they are going to align with or not. Trumps Tour certainly showed the World just where Trump and this nation now stands.....but the Int'l. leaders also know the Intense Power struggles going on here and aren't certain how that is going to play out. I think Merkel's very busy traveling about attempting to secure and assume her leadership over the EU which is surely on shaky ground currently. It's very interesting to see the shifts happening on the World Stage....VERY!

Err, excuse me, I know you’re aiming for political posturing, Germany, but Greece needs another twenty eight billion dollars to keep from going insolvent this month and Portugal’s creditors are looking forward to some of that interest payment you promised, and Italy kind of sorta spent too much money last month and is a little short, and Poland just gave you the finger, again.

Oh, and the UK is leaving the UK and apparently has absolutely no political willpower to drop a few hundred billion on the EU as a tip for all their years of propping up the system.

Huh, yeah, this is just the PERFECT time to play political games with the sugar daddy US and snub them just when they’re starting to get a bit of political willpower to make Europe pay at least part of the cost of protecting Europe.

Trapping Comey and putting his tit in a wringer (Just watch). First time in 16 years mining is showing a profit and new coal mine opening up. Unemployment close to 4% best in 16 years. First LNG shipment to Europe. Dow at record levels. GDP rocketing up. Consolidation of VA and DOD medical systems. etc.

Damn I could go on for hours. There is so much. Heck, how about his cheese in a maze strategy with the media. Covfefe..... LOLOLOL. Google the strategic term (CIM). While they chased that for a whole 2 cycles he got more done. Hell, lets not forget Neil F’n Goresich.

He is systematically driving them before him and slaying them. May?? Merkel??? Macron???? Truedou or however you spell that nancy boys name?????

Sending Rodman to talk to Kimmy when Donald knows him well (Apprentice)? The chess game being played is beyond the greatest grand master.

The German press should be getting the idea that Merkel is delusional thinking she could isolate the United States. Heh.

Well that was an interesting and informative read. Good food for thought.

I don’t really care for Merkel and wish they would replace her but one never knows if the next person is going to be even worse. In the end my opinion means nothing but I do know as long as Merkel is in charge; Europe is in danger of being destroyed from within by Islam. It might even be too late as it is.

Trump’s opposition to the Paris “accords” wasn’t a surprise, nor was his act of withdrawing, if one can be said to withdraw from something we were never properly in in the first place. So what’s with all the posturing nonsense? And what’s the point in attempting to “isolate” the only fellow in the room who’s speaking the truth? Does Merkel really think that Trump cares? I mean seriously, given his track record, his personality, and his spoken word, does she think he cares about seeming “isolated”? If she does, she’s going to find dealing with Russia, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic just a little awkward. They don’t care either.
