The German chancellor had been hoping to isolate Donald Trump on climate issues at the upcoming G-20 summit in Hamburg. But Merkels hoped-for alliance is crumbling, underscoring Germanys relative political weakness globally. Many countries are wary of angering the United States.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel had actually thought that Canadas young, charismatic prime minister, Justin Trudeau, could be counted among her reliable partners. Particularly when it came to climate policy. Just two weeks ago, at the G-7 summit in Sicily, he had thrown his support behind Germany. When Merkel took a confrontational approach to U.S. President Donald Trump, Trudeau was at her side. But by Tuesday evening, things had changed. At 8 p.m., Merkel called Trudeau to talk about how to proceed following Trumps announced withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. To her surprise, the Canadian prime minister was no longer on the attack. He had switched to appeasement instead. [ ]
The first cracks began appearing on the Thursday before last. After returning from the G-7 summit in the Sicilian town of Taormina, Merkel had sent a clear signal to her team: We have to stay together; we have to close ranks. [ ]
Suddenly, though, Britain and Japan no longer wanted to be part of it. British Prime Minister Theresa May didnt want to damage relations with Trump, since she would need him in the event of a hard Brexit, the Chancellery surmised last week. And given the tensions with North Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe couldnt put his countrys alliance with the U.S. at risk. In other words: Climate policy is great, but when it comes to national interests, it is secondary.

With the UNITED STATES out of the Climate Alliance, other countries know they will be forced to PAY UP!!!
Why in hell would a German Chancellor think she gets to run the world? Didn’t they learn their lesson?
She has a mess in her own country she needs to get working on.
Bingo!
Who is going to replace the US as Uncle Moneybags?
These countries are lining up at the trough, they dont care about global warming.
No money, no alliance.
“Many countries are wary of angering the United States.”
Too late.
She’s such a load.
I thought Trump was playing 4D chess. I was so wrong. He is playing 196D chess. (Number of countries in the world + Taiwan) I am in awe. It is truly awesome in the actual meaning of the word awesome.
That is just in foreign affairs. To see his domestic success so far takes my awe and makes it veneration.
Merkel is pathetic. I cannot believe anyone looks at her and sees a good leader.
....Who is going to replace the US as Uncle Moneybags...
Let George Soros do it.
Poor haus frau.
She and that other cleaning lady, Madeline Albright.
SAFE SPACE! SAFE SPACE!
VERY interesting article. Thanks for posting.
The sucker left the table so the card game is breaking up.
Germany’s not doing well with the refugees killing their economic status.......which is why ol Merkel has screamed for help from all the other nations, she can’t afford to house and feed them all let alone integrate them into German society and the costs of doing so....and she’s running out of leverage.
BWAHAHAHA! Trump 1,East Germany 0!
