WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI chief he fired called the president a liar, but the response from many Republicans was a collective shrug. The GOP still needs Donald Trump if it has any hope of accomplishing its legislative agenda and winning elections, and it’s going to take more than James Comey’s testimony to shake them.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday boasted of the GOP’s accomplishments under Trump thus far, and promised more to come, making no mention of Comey in a speech. A group of House conservatives discussed taxes and the budget, with no reference to Comey or the federal investigations into Russia’s election meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
Elsewhere, there were few outward signs of concern from the top Republican officials, donors and business leaders who gathered largely behind closed doors in Park City, Utah, for a conference hosted by former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
“The people in this room, who give money to the Republican Party and who are focused on helping get Republicans elected, they do it because they believe in an agenda,” Spencer Zwick, House Speaker Paul Ryan’s fundraising chief, said in an interview. As for the Comey testimony, “there’s nothing we can do about it,” Zwick said.
It all underscored what’s become a hardening dynamic of the Trump presidency: Republicans on Capitol Hill and off are mostly sticking with the president despite the mounting scandals and seemingly endless crises that surround him.

Sorry, I don't see the Republicans in Washington being a major support of Trump. The man is on his own, and doing the best he can. I haven't seen one public statement in defense of Trump on any issue. NOT ONE! There may have been some in the hearings, but you can't shut the left up when their people's necks are on the line. Our team? Crickets.

I’m watching Hannity and Jay Sekulow and Sean are talking about Comey going to jail. Then I scroll and see this headline. It’s like we live in two different worlds. The media is corrupt.

Poor AP. Comey said the President lied because he said the FBI was in disarray, and had lost confidence in it’s leader.
That is OBVIOUSLY true given the Cankles severs, but it is an OPINION. Not a lie.

Agreed. All the shade that Trump was throwing could be taken (and this is the way I take it) as personal to Comey. Comey's FBI is a shambles. Comey's FBI has crappy morale, and so on. Get rid of Comey, and the FBI shapes up.
Most people get it, which makes them laugh at the likes of CNN.

Why would they not stick with him after the exculpatory testimony? Oh right, the fake news press needs him to be marginalized in order to halt his agenda.

I’m glad to hear you say that, because that’s how I see him also. I think it gives him pleasure to credit others with their accomplishments on his or the nation’s behalf.
He is obviously a good leader. His organization is top notch.
I watched the video about his “TRUMP” aircraft.
The guy us absolutely meticulous with regard to that plane. His lead pilot and person who supervises the care of everything relating to the aircraft describes Trump’s policy.
It’s pretty amazing.
It was my take that he would be an amazing leader, and he has made me think I under-estimated his abilities since.
This AP take on Republicans sticking with Trump, will be very disappointing to hear, for Mika and Joe.
