Rabbit hole leads to incredible 700-year-old Knights Templar cave complex

A rabbit hole in the UK conceals the entrance to an incredible cave complex linked to the mysterious Knights Templar.

New photos show the remarkable Caynton Caves network, which looks like something out of the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” The shadowy Knights Templar order is said to have used the caves.

The Sun reports that the caves are hidden beneath a farmer’s field in Shropshire. The site was visited by photographer Michael Scott after he saw a video of the caves online. “I traipsed over a field to find it, but if you didn’t know it was there you would just walk right past it,” Scott said.

Once inside, Scott encountered arches, walkways, and carved niches. He described the caves as cramped, noting that anyone nearing six-feet tall has to bend down inside the complex. “I had to crouch down and once I was in it was completely silent,” he said. “There were a few spiders in there but that was it. ..."

Said to be 700 years old, the caves have been long been linked to the Knights Templar – a Catholic military order that played a key role during the Crusades. Named after Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, where the order was based, the order was founded in 1119 protect pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.

PIC BY Michael Scott/ Caters News - (PICTURED: The hole into the caves) - It might look like an ordinary rabbits hole, but this tunnel unearths a stunning CAVE. The unassuming hole reveals a cave which is hidden less than a metre beneath a farmers field. The untouched caves, in Shropshire, date back 700 years when they were used by the Knights Templars - a medieval religious order that fought in the Crusades. Photographer Michael Scott, from Birmingham, set out in search of the historical wonder after seeing a video of it online. SEE CATERS COPY.

Looks like a dungeon out of Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. A skeleton with an ax might pop out.

Not familiar with that. But it does look like something out of Indiana Jones.

More fake news headlines.

From the article, “The Sun reports that the caves are hidden beneath a farmer’s field in Shropshire. The site was visited by photographer Michael Scott after he saw a video of the caves online.”

So the photographer goes to ask the guy who owns the land if he can go in and take pictures, and the guy says “Yes.” This cave has been known about forever and wasn’t “discovered” or “under a rabbit hole”. The guy buried the entrance to keep out creepy trespassers that were using it for little faux black magic and witchcraft Euroweenieboppers.

Where does the story claim it was something newly discovered? In any case, it's still an incredible network of caves lying beneath, what today, is a fairly small hole in the ground. Even ancient Egyptian tombs were many times "discovered", or "re-discovered", over the years.

From your Wikipedia link...

The Caynton Caves are a series of man-made underground chambers in the grounds of Caynton Hall, near Beckbury, Shropshire, England. Their original purpose and date of construction are disputed, though most authoritative sources date them to the 19th century.
Description and history

The caverns comprise an irregular series of neo-Romanesque ambulatories and chambers hollowed out of sandstone, with carved archways, pillars, symbols and niches, apparently for candles. They are located about 250 metres (820 ft) west of Caynton Hall, beneath privately-owned woodland, within a disused stone quarry. One suggestion is that they were the result of quarrying during the mid-19th century and were then turned by the landowners, the Legge family, into a grotto or underground folly.[1][2][3]

There have been speculative claims that the caverns are older, perhaps dating back at least to the 17th century, and some press articles have associated them with the Knights Templar.[4][5] However, historian and author Dan Jones considers that there is no evidence linking the caves to the Templars [6] and Historic England dates the grotto as probably late 18th-century or early 19th-century.[7]

The site is on private land and not open to the public.[2] However, since at least the 1980s, the caverns have sometimes been used for informal secret ceremonies and rituals. They have been vandalised and were closed off in 2012 as a result.[1][4] Later unblocked, they were accessed by a photographer and received widespread publicity in March 2017.[5][8]
