Lawmakers demand more information and privacy protections before reauthorizing FISA snooping powers

Congress shouldn’t reauthorize the government’s most potent snooping powers until it imposes stronger safeguards for Americans, a key conservative lawmaker said in response to a judge’s ruling that U.S. intelligence agencies tried to hide potential breaches of privacy rights.

Rep. Raul R. Labrador, Idaho Republican, said Judge Rosemary M. Collyer’s April ruling is the latest in a string of warning signs that federal agencies need more oversight before Congress renews their broad powers under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

In particular, Mr. Labrador and several colleagues want to know how often Americans’ information is scooped up and examined in a process that, according to Section 702, is supposed to be targeted at foreigners.

The National Security Agency and other intelligence branches have refused to divulge the information on Americans to Congress, even though Judge Collyer said in her ruling that the government could try to identify it.

The British PM says it all the internets' fault.

"The Act, championed by Ms May, requires internet service providers to maintain a list of visited websites for all internet users for a year and gives intelligence agencies more powers to intercept online communications. Police can access the stored browsing history without any warrant or court order."

While I agree, it sure is annoying that the only time these types of concerns are addressed, is when we have someone who wouldn’t want to abuse them.

When Obama was abusing the IRS, and all sorts of eavesdropping rules... crickets!

These damn bastards in Congress are only addressing these things because Trump is in office. If Hillary were there, no concerns would be expressed at all.

The FISA court was certainly abused under Obama.

Those were my very thoughts when reading this.

0bama probably abused this for his entire eight years, we know he certainly did for his second term and not a thing was done about it.

Now that President Trump is at the reins a Republican comes forward and wants to fix it...I’m skeptical of his motives but it does need to be specifically changed with dire consequences for people that abuse it as it was abused by 0bama’s administration.

I agree. It does need to be fixed where it’s broken.

We shouldn’t even start the discussion until we know who was spied on and what was passed around Obama’s cronies by “unmasking.”

There must be a penalty for abuse or else they are just urinating into the wind. Example: Comey obtained a FISA warrant based upon the “Urinating Prostitutes” file which he knew was not verified (and probably BS) but he lied about the veracity and value of the file. Just like a prosecutor that hides witnesses and evidence from the defense, he has committed a crime and should be criminally liable.

The key to fighting this FISA tyranny is punishing Obama’s people, whichisnotgoingtohappen.

The Patriot Act should be repealed. it is a massive violation of civil liberties and the Fourth Amendment.
