The accidental hero who halted the global spread of an unprecedented ransomware attack by registering a garbled domain name hidden in the malware has warned the attack could be rebooted.
*snip*
...the spread of the attack was brought to a sudden halt when one UK cybersecurity researcher tweeting as @malwaretechblog, with the help of Darien Huss from security firm Proofpoint, found and inadvertently activated a kill switch in the malicious software.

I keep receiving emails that show they are from my brother, with a link to a Russian site. Hovering the mouse over the sender's name display's a Russian origin. Don't click on any links period.

My understanding, too.
That's why I upgraded to Windows 10, which runs perfectly, just like XP.
I've used Windows for 20 years.
I've been hacked once - when one of my former professors mass mailed an infected email to his former students.
I rebooted into Safe Mode and McAfee destroyed the virus.
Windows users ARE the problem.
A friend of mine who fixes windows PCs said when he tells people to do updates and install an anti virus so the problems he fixes will stop they almost always say , “I don’t give a crap”
every tiem the link is lcicked- it is nothign but a blank page, with a message such as the following, which gets updated each time you click hte link- to a new message
“Ya gotta feel sorry for all them convicts in New Hampshire, stampin’ out license plates that say Live free or Die. “
Always some stupid question, like “Why does a writer write, but fingers don’t fing?”
Why didn’t the NSA stop this? It was their exploit Why did it take a blogger to figure it out.
Is the NSA useless or do they have an agenda?
his answer should be “Fine by me, keep paying the big bucks to ‘fix’ your computer each time”
The existence of anonymous payment systems is the only reason mass ransomware exists.
Otherwise, ransomware would just be pointless vandalism, or deliberate attacks by rogue, hostile governments.
OMG - don’t you edit??? Or did you misspell all those words on purpose? If so, what for? Geeeez!
wow- soundsl iek your day has been ruined-
Re: “I keep receiving emails that show they are from my brother...”
The only way they could do that is to steal your brother’s password and use his mailing list.
Or, if your brother already changed his password after the hack, they have created an email account that reads almost exactly like your brother’s real email address to trick you.
GWX Control Panel (at least the version I'm running) will allow you to enable Windows 7 updates while still disabling the Windows 10 stuff.
MalwareBytes has an anti-Ransomware product in late beta, which is FREE. Might be a good solution for XP/Vista users. Search “Malwarebytes anti-ransomware”. I downloaded from a link at Major Geeks. Installation was fast and easy.
[[I keep receiving emails that show they are from my brother,]]
that’s what happened to us- see my previous post on this- only the link is registered to a Ukrainian site -
DO NOT CLICK!
I already contacted the F.R. Administrator.
I ran it through link checkers- and nothign showed up suspicious- I was wondering if there was a way to make 100% sure it’s safe- I did put the warning in my post-
This “might” help .....

Supported Configurations
CryptoPrevent is designed to peacefully co-exist alongside these other solutions, create no detectable impact in normal system performance, demand no time for maintenance, nor requiring any specialized user knowledge for usage.
CryptoPrevent supports any Windows version (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 including Windows Home editions)
Introduction to CryptoPrevent Malware Prevention
YES, this is the original CryptoLocker prevention tool youve read about, designed to prevent infection from the first ransomware threat which emerged in late 2013, encrypting valuable data on the infected PC and offering decryption in exchange for large payment. Within a few months of its release it created quite a buzz with features from Brian Krebs security blog (among many others) and by educators everywhere such as Kim Komando, Ken Dwight The Virus Doctor, the infamous Britec09 on Youtube, and ultimately reaching televised news such as CNBC and The Today Show! Read more about the history of CryptoPrevent.
Even with Windows 7 Updates turned off, I still get occasional ‘critical’ updates.
Well, THAT really answers my question./sarc
