Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a frequent critic of the Trump administration, blasted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for suggesting that Americas foreign policy must stray from its core values at times.
Tillerson said it was important to understand the difference between policy and values, in an address to State Department employees Wednesday. He said that that America First means that U.S. national security and economic interests will sometimes override the demand for other countries to adhere to American values.
If we condition too heavily that others must adopt this value that weve come to over a long history of our own, it really creates obstacles to our ability to advance our national security interests, our economic interests, Tillerson said.

That is the way I see it.
Conservatives live in reality. Liberals like McCain live in fantasy.
I agree with Tillerson 100% on this.
The strength and security of our nation must always be the focus of American foreign policy.
Yes, American values can be embraced in foreign nations, but most foreigners (understandably) find our values to be foreign. Many foreigners find American values to be repugnant. (As do most college professors here at home.)
It would be nice if every nation could be a free society with a republican form of government. But most cultures on the planet don’t provide the basic frameworks for that to happen. Attempts to impose the same are destined yo fail.
Other countries are demanding we act according to their dictates. And by what right do they make that demand.
Well put.
Well this North Korean defector certainly likes the way Trump is handling things so far:
The Devil frequently mocks Christians for doing the right thing but with perhaps un-Christian tactics. As if the Devil cares about your fealty to Christian values.
Same thing with liberals. They have no problem violating American values as long as they agree with liberal values but let their values disagree with American values and the Left will be right there with a willing excuse.
With that one statement McCain shows EXACTLY why this nation is in such a messed up state. “Values” are whatever the progressives define them to the latest fad. Policies and written law is what we are suppose to follow.
Failed presidential candidate McInsane.
McCain wants to wimp out - - it’s his style. He should have been a democrat.
Troll McCain is the official Senate Outrage Monkey.
AMEN to that... McCain's an idiot.
I think that is little more than recognition that we interact with other nations of the world as we find them, not how we would prefer them to be. Our constitution and our values aren’t those of the rest of the world nor should they be. All nations have their own history and there own path to how they are formed and function.
Just a "SONGBIRDbrain" doin what "SONGBIRDbrains" do!
Hey Juan go home an feed that porker, DDD breast, SONGBIRDbrain daughter some worms!!!!
Is that going against what Tillerson is saying.
It’s one thing if it is about Nukes...
It is another if it is just because we don’t like the way he runs his country because he is a dictator.
And if we are worried about Nukes...what about Iran
Yep. Finally an administration that has the guts to tell it like it is. In politics one has to deal with the lesser of evils -- always.
John is being either Politically Correct or a globalist or both.
Yeah, let's have McCain tell all of us how he divorced his ailing first wife so he could marry a “beer heiress.”
“Tillerson was only stating reality.”
True, the US has backed “authoritarian” regimes when it has suited.
F*ck you McNuts!!!!
That might be one way to look at it.
The reality is that the US has had a big influence on regime change throughout our history via the intelligence community. Usually ends up badly.
