Deer are generally considered one of the more benign creatures of the forest, going about their herbivorous ways in peace. But as new research shows, there’s a dark side to these ungulates. Using camera traps, forensic scientists have captured unprecedented photos of deer munching on the skeletal remains of a human carcass.

“Herein, we report on the first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains,” write the Texas State University researchers in their new study, which can be found in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. On its own, this behavior is noteworthy enough, but the finding could prove useful to forensic scientists conducting murder investigations.

Most herbivores will eat meat if they can get it. They’re not well adapted for it but it’s a better food source than plants.

I recall an FR article from a long, long time ago about deer scavenging dead fish on the shores of the Great Lakes.

I always knew that lovable Bambi crap was leftist media propaganda. Just like the refugees being helpless widows and orphans.

Hitting a deer is so common here in Alabama, we even have unofficial rules for it. First you find out if anyone is hurt and help them call anyone needed. Then and only then may you ask the important question “ You gonna want that deer ?”

Maybe chewing grass or something, but not flesh that is long gone.

Not flesh - most likely gnawing at the bones for the minerals.

That is probably the idea, too.

They probably expect animals to remove parts of the corpse which can help understand the process.

Deer will gnaw on any bones they find, their antler growth stimulates cravings for the minerals in them.

Salt.

I figured salt or some other minerals they crave.

I have a video of a squirrel gnawing on a set of antlers in the tree outside my office window. You could get within 10 feet of him before he would run away then would soon return for more as if he were addicted.

Could very well be trying to get the minerals in the bones.

Deer are not carnivores. They do like salt licks and minerals.

I believe in some states you can hunt over a salt lick. I don’t know of any where you can hunt over a human carcass though.
