Sessions: MS-13 gang could be designated as terrorist organization
The Hill ^ | 04/19/17 08:19 AM EDT | Rebecca Savransky

Attorney General Jeff Sessions says the MS-13 gang could be designated as a terrorist organization.

Asked by Fox News's Tucker Carlson on Tuesday whether he thinks the designation would be helpful, Sessions replied, “I think so, perhaps. I believe it could qualify for that."

"There are rules that I guess the State Department does to establish that," he added. El Salvador's government has already designated MS-13 a terrorist group.

Sessions called the gang "one of the most violent gangs in the history of our country."

“We can devastate this gang. We’re going after them," he said. "We’re not going to allow them to take over a block, a corner of our communities and terrorize people with this violence.” Speaking to a meeting of the Organized Crime Council on Tuesday, Sessions blamed open borders and lax immigration enforcement for the growth of the Salvadoran crime gang.

He said his Justice Department would have "zero tolerance" for the gang violence.

"We cannot allow this to continue. We will secure our border, expand immigration enforcement and choke off supply lines," said Sessions.

MS-13 is the U.S.-based arm of Salvadoran crime gang Mara Salvatrucha. Its members are known for their violent methods and fierce gang loyalty. According to the National Gang Intelligence Center, MS-13 has more than 10,000 members in the United States, and more than 30,000 worldwide. Early Tuesday, President Trump blamed former President Obama's immigration policies for the formation of MS-13, a gang the FBI has been closely tracking since at least 2004.

I agree with Sessions that this gang, along with many others, can and should be dealt with harshly, but Ms. Savransky gets one important fact very wrong. The MS-13 gang, as well as Mara 18 are not "El Salvadoran" gangs. They had their start in the 1980s in Los Angeles, then many were later deported to Central American where they festered and metastasized. They are now merely America's chickens coming home to roost.

Don't confuse the issue by using the wrong labels.

While he’s at it, could we declare the Democratic Party a terrorist group?

Although they don’t share ideologies and tactics with Islam the strategy is the same. Political control is the goal and the violence speaks for itself. That is until the political system is destroyed.

I’d be OK with Rody “Do Dirty” Duterte style death squads.

Gangs should be considered CRIMINAL organizations and subject to RICO.

You’re right. Regardless of labels, still the same garbage.

Different garbage and different motivation may require different strategies to deal with them.
I'm opposed to carelessly slapping the label Terrorist on people who are not technically terrorists (or refusing to call it terror when it clearly is).
It's to distract us from the Real Terror, the Left is doing that a lot.

Chopping people's heads off is pretty terrifying for the victims.

That is what MS-13 has been doing. That's terror.

Terrorism is loosely defined as the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. Some definitions include the political requirement, others do not.

I don’t know anything personally about MS-13 but Wikipedia has a pretty good summary. They seem to be mostly criminal with no known ties to ISIS or AQ, but those lines can easily blur over time depending on who and how they recruit.

I don’t have any problem with Session using the terrorist label if it gives him additional tools to put these gangs down.

What would you consider “technically” a terrorist? In my opinion, any activity that instills terror in the public is terrorism, and should be dealt with in any effective manner available. On newscasts I see violence from MS and Mara 18, among others, on nearly a daily basis. Removing people from buses, shooting the driver, dowsing it with gasoline and setting it afire is terrorism. Killing taxi drivers with passengers aboard is terrorism. Shooting up little “Mom and Pop” stores, with no regard for anyone unlucky enough to be in the store at the time, because they refused to pay extortion is terrorism. Forcing businesses to close because they can’t afford to pay extortion to three or more different gangs, with death as the alternative, is terrorism.

Many people would welcome a Duterte style solution to the problem, but at any mention of a real crack down by the government the UN Human Rights culeros scream to high heaven and threaten a cutoff of foreign aid to the country. Obama was especially prone to use that stick to pander to corrupt politicians and coddle narco gangs.

I don’t know what the “Real Terror” is from which we’re being distracted, but I believe terrorism is terrorism regardless of what clothing it wears. The Policia Militar has been doing a good job during this current administration to put major pressure on the scumbags, but the Liberales and Libres (read: Democrats and Communists) are crying and whining to have that police force disbanded, much to the glee of the UN Commission. Unless Trump is willing to wield a huge club in the immigration and crime situations, all these things will soon be coming to a neighborhood near you.

Send them to Guantanamo to wait for trial. And wait. And wait.

Hope they like ABBA. At 145 decibels.

re: labelling a group such as this a "terror group". I agree with you. There's too much danger of the label used for political purposes if it isn't very specifically about ISIS style terrorism. Turkey and Ukraine have already developed the practice of everyone who fights against the gov being labelled as a terrorist.

I wouldn't discount the possibility that the Democratic Party would label Deplorables as terrorists if they could. Why take even a small step down that slippery slope?

My point exactly.

Even though criminal gangs spread terror, nothing is gained by conflating MS-13 and ISIS.
Different beasts, different patterns, we need different ammo and strategy. No place to drop a MOAB on MS-13.
They're both bad but let's keep the language clear. No more PC or phony fairness games.
