My guess is that China sees North Korea as a major problem. NK’s moves have awakened the Japanese military, which China prefers to be sleeping. If China can “quiet” North Korea, Japan and South Korea might relax.

China taking over North Korea is a win for everyone...except Russia and Iran.

If China did “come over the border”, would they use tactical nukes?

Very likely they would, if their military leadership is completely under control and as fanatical as is usually assumed.
The rational assumption for those people is that NK is not a viable state without a friendly China, and with a hostile China it means the NK regime will be gone in short order. The question is - just how irrational are they?

Sounds like xi and trump planning to force a coup to take out fatboy

The winning just keeps on keeping on.

Obama never tried to do anything. He just rolled over.

I imagine, over the next 8 years, Trump will do a number of things that I don't agree with.
At least he's a REAL LEADER.

This has to piss the left off to no end.

1-Because IT'S Trump doing it. They hate all things Trump.
2-Obama never did anything. This just exposes it more.

The Chinese could simply eliminate the little weasel and “annex” the pitiful little North Korean state.

If they annex the north, they're going to continue with the south.

They don’t need nukes. All of North Korea’s assets are pointing south. If NK moves them north, China will see that as a threat to them. If China comes over the border, it will be a short fight.

Kim’s in a bind. The bigger question is what Kim will do with his nukes. Maybe that is why the ships are there, protecting Japan with the SM-3’s which can shoot down ballistic missiles.

“When will our strike force arrive in operational range?”

We have Ohio Subs within range at all times.

What is the range?

Somewhere between 4200 Nautical Miles to 7,456 mi (12,000 km) (exact is classified)

Trident II missiles make the Tomahawks look like mosquito bites in comparison to total devastation.

Trident II missiles are carried by 14 US Ohio and 4 British Vanguard-class submarines, with 24 missiles on each Ohio class and 16 missiles on each Vanguard class.

Specifications:
Unit cost: US$ 37.3 million
Range: With full load 7,840 kilometres (4,230 nmi);
with reduced load approx. 7,456 mi (12,000 km) (exact is classified)[8]
Maximum speed: Approximately 18,030 mph (29,020 km/h) (Mach 24)[1](terminal phase)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UGM-133_Trident_II

Another question, what was the date of our Navy’s most recent test of their Trident II D5 missile?

US Navy carries out Trident II D5 missile testing | Naval Today

navaltoday.com/2017/02/17/us-navy-carries-out-trident-ii-d5-missile-testing/

Feb 17, 2017 - US Navy file photo of a Trident II D-5 ballistic missile launch from an Ohio-class ... Since its introduction to the fleet in 1989, the Trident II D5 missile has completed 165 successful test flights. ..

Final question, who was our POTUS on 17 Feb 2017?

China and South Korea are financial partners. They would be inheriting a fight they don’t want. It’s bad for business.

Lets hope that NK don’t threaten China. They seem pretty bold and like to threaten everyone but then again maybe that is because they were allowed to be bold.

They certainly would go all out to woo the South away from the US/Japan. There would be an all-stops-out courtship. SK politics and public opinion is erratic enough that it may work.

I just thought it was time to include a worst case scenario in the discussion. But I certainly hope all this optimism is warranted. My eldest brother died in the early days of the Korean War, a few years before I was born, and I have spent a lot of time in S. Korea and China. So for me this is kind of personal.

In the photo, Fat Boy is clearly standing on something to appear taller than everybody else. Reminds me of “Tippy Toes” Yeb.
