The United Airlines passenger who was hauled off an overbooked plane is a poker-playing doctor from Kentucky with a sordid past.

Dr. David Dao, 69, who was captured in a now-viral video being forcibly dragged off the Louisville-bound flight at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Sunday, was working as a doctor specializing in pulmonary disease in Elizabethtown when he was convicted of trading prescription drugs for sex favors.

According to documents filed with the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, Dao was arrested in 2003 on the drug-related offenses following an undercover investigation.

They seemed to be lacking in well thought out solutions. I am glad they are not in charge of our defense dept.

The conservative issue here is holding United accountable for its actions instead of focusing on reactions by those wronged by United.

He wasn't dragged off the plane because they overbooked it, he was dragged off the plane because he threw an out-of-control (drug-induced??) fit and did not obey the instructions of the flight crew ... as all passengers on commercial airliners are required by federal law to do.

I'm not condoning what UAL did, but this man's actions contributed significantly to what happened to him.

I guess it explains why he was so determined to see his patients the next morning.:-)

Everyone has something in their lives they are likely not proud of. It still does not excuse the beating from United Airlines enforcers.

Are you this cavalier with people in your life who breach a contract with you?

How can getting bumped off a flight possibly be a breach of contract when the terms and conditions posted on the ticket documents explicitly permit the airline to do exactly what they did?

What relevance does that have to United overbooking its flights?

Reasonable people don’t read the lawyerly drivel on page 35, in 2 pt. Typeface. They buy a ticket and expect the ticket be honored.

It’s been determined that United acted lawfully and legally. It’s been determined that United crew was put on board for legal safety measures. It’s been determined that the doctor was given a legal and lawful order, and he chose to react in a disruptive manner.

IMO the doctor was acting no better than an unruly drunk who refused to follow the orders of a flight attendant, Or even a muslim who gets down on all fours and starts “allahu ackbar” prayers.

See Post #114. “Reasonable people” — like the other three people who didn’t throw temper tantrums when they were bumped from the same flight as this dope — know all about the idiotic vagaries of airline travel.

They buy a ticket and expect the ticket be honored ...

but if it's not honored that does not give the aggrieved party license to go nuts in an enclosed space packed with people such as an airliner cabin!

I'm going to start a taxi business.

And I'm going to institute a policy that allows me to take a fare, but pick up fares along the way and kick out the first fare if needed.

The first fare won't get their money back. But I'll come back and pick them up within 72 hours.

And since I know that business model sucks ass I'm going to throw a lot of money at my State legislators to get taxi laws modified to specifically allow my policy and at the same time exempt taxis from traditional contract law, including principles surrounding Contracts of Adhesion.

sound great?

That's what the airlines have done.

That's not very conservative, nor is it something the average voter would tell their representative to vote for...

The best thing that will come out of this will be the sheep waking up and demanding the laws be addressed to prevent the airlines from using government to suspend basic contract law and prop up their bad policy.

United had no business overbooking in the first place. Then they screwed up by allowing too many people to board. They should have found alternative transportation for the employees who ended up taking those spaces. They could have chartered a plane for them, if nothing else. It would have been a lot cheaper than the lawsuit that’s coming. Greedy jerks.
