New York would be the first state to make tuition at public colleges and universities free for middle-class students under a state budget set for passage in Albany.

The plan crafted by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo would apply to any New York student whose family has an annual income of $125,000 or less. To qualify the student would have to meet certain class load and grade point average restrictions, and room and board would not be covered.

Cuomo said Sunday that the tuition plan, which his office has estimated to cost $163 million, is a national first.

This will be an interesting experiment. $163 is the benchmark projected cost. Let's see how this works out in 5 years . . .

If you think college is expensive now, wait until it is free.

...free for middle-class students....

What about everyone else? Doesn’t that defy the Constitution’s equal protection clause?

I see tuitions going up and the classes getting easier.

Colleges will see this as easy money.

When Andrew’s father Mario was Governor, he provided free college education to convicted felons in NY’s prison system. When I worked at Auburn Prison, inmates there could get a Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University for free. Thankfully, George Pataki eliminated that policy.

Nothing is free. NY will raise their taxes to pay for it.

Liberals never learn about spending other people’s money. Just another nail in the coffin for New York and another impetus for mass emigration out of this rabid leftist hellhole named New York. Expect taxes to go up as everyone flees to southern climes. Commies never learn, incapable of it.

"If you think college is expensive now, wait until it is free."

Make sure the professors, T.A.s and the entire administrative staff and custodial services are on board with working for "free".

Once they agree to that, I don't really give a log.

Just cap tuition at some arbitrary low number, like $3,000/semester. If the feds can dictate minimum wage surely they can dictate maximum tuition.

“I see tuitions going up and the classes getting easier.”

You are right. Classes get easier-sure sociology, women
studies, etc. The students who are series about getting an education may go to a private school or out-of-state. At least state and city governments in New York will have a steady supply of low skilled inarticulate applications.
But they will have a college degree!

New York is just going to raise middle class taxes a couple hundred percent to pay for it.

You’re welcome. :)

Let me see if my math is right. $10,000 per year per in-state student. About $160,000,000 to fund the program.
That takes care of about 16,000 students, the size of a mid size state university. One should figure on a much larger number. Also, free tuition for now, free room, board, books, fees, and spending money within two to three years.
