The man in the Camden, N.J., police video is practically begging to be shot. After using a knife to menace a cashier and a customer in a fast-food restaurant, he strides down a street slashing at the air as police repeatedly order him to drop his weapon. The man keeps walking, defiantly waving the knife.
Several cops form a ring around him and move along at a safe distance, block after block. This goes on for several tense minutes, as the viewer waits for shots to ring out. But they never do. Eventually, the man drops the knife and is collared.
It's a reasonably happy outcome. Had the 2015 incident occurred a year earlier, before the department adopted new tactics, "we would more than likely have deployed deadly force and moved on," Chief J. Scott Thomson told The New York Times. Instead, the offender survived, and no cop had to deal with the trauma of killing him.

I am interested in blade training. It sounds like you had a great instructor.
And he can still be lethal even if you put a round in him. The are tons of instances where a perp kept coming even after taking one to the chest. And there are a lot of police training videos on youtube demonstrating that a thug with a knife at 30 feet can close and stab an officer before the officer can unholster and present his weapon. And in those videos the officer knew he was going to be coming.
The épée might be an appropriate counter weapon to subdue the perp.
This article was written by a complete fool who has no connection to the real world.
Just a lucky but reckless gamble. How many times was the perp within a split second lunge from killing someone - because the cops did not contain him in one place but allowed him to roam while merely following him in a circle?
Here's a video of another incident where cops also failed to contain a perp with a knife - when he decided to use it. Try to count how many wind up stabbed!

—one of my favorite movie scenes-—
—yep—( I replied to #8 before I saw your post)
Exactly right.
Holy cow.
I guess you don’t remember all the “Steve Chapmans” whining about that scene shortly after the debut?
Why do people on the left give a care about human life? They don’t believe we are anything but another animal. They tend to believe that a cow and an ant are of equal worth as a human. So why do they freak out over a police shooting” They hold the view that there are too many humans on the planet, and they are more negative than positive on the grand scale of things, so why the freak out over police shootings of obvious defectives?
Actually, the original scene was a sword-against-bullwhip fight. The deleted scene is around.
In the meantime, how many crimes could the large number of cops who had to be called in for this have prevented / investigated? This type of intervention is not cost free.
Patrol cars are not equipped with chain-link butterfly nets, unfortunately!
A well-sharpened pencil or a steel shelled pen works adequately, too.
I do not. In fact, I am not even sure who Steve Chapman is.
I was very young when that movie came out.
Yes, but of course not as effective as a stout fixed blade knife.
But I think the primary advantage one should seek with a melee weapon is to get in range of use without your target suspecting an attacking is coming.
The secondary advantage is to have practiced a series of lethal and debilitating strikes that can be delivered before the target knows what is occurring.
You do not want to provide them any opportunity to counter or evade.
