Glenn Beck, who once opined that marriage equality would lead to social destruction, has changed his mind on LGBT equality. Riaz Patel, his new gay BFF, insists the transformation is sincere.
The unlikely metamorphosis of Glenn Beck from nutty right-wing conspiracy-monger to rational-seeming defender of American democracy—and opponent of all things Donald Trump—has crossed over into a new frontier.
The 53-year-old multimedia firebrand and self-described “catastrophist”—who shocked and possibly alienated his dwindling fan-base three months ago by forming an anti-Trump alliance with lefty satirist Samantha Bee—is these days spending quality time with a Pakistani-born, politically liberal, gay, Muslim television producer.

The phrase does seem like a combination of more than one example of oxymorons.
However, in spite of the seeming dominance of either direct Islamist fundamentalists, or Muslims that either are not outwardly against them or act as apologists for them, the personal attributes said to identify with this new friend of Glenn Beck, there are numerous examples of “totally secular”, and/or “political Liberal”, and or “gay” and totally non-fundamentalist Muslims, in the west and in Muslim majority countries like Pakistan.
One such non-conforming Muslim intellectual I know, from Pakistan, is in the U.S. in the visa status of political asylum, as his life is under threat and would be certain if he returned to Pakistan. He has many friends and admirers there, in all classes, who like him continue to try speak out in Pakistan against all the Sharia and Islamization that has increased in Pakistan since Zia ruled.
So they do exist - Muslims more like westerners than most westerners would believe - but they are frequently embattled in their own societies and not lifted up much in the media here.
As far as Glenn Beck himself. I quit listening to him some years ago. I cannot judge anything he says anymore, ‘cause I’m not interested and therefor ignorant about what he’s saying.
Me too. Patel is not a Muslim name, usually Hindu background. Very common name.
Maybe this person is a convert, or his father was etc...

In Gujarat and other areas of north-central India, it can be even more common. I once taught at a high school in a community with a large Gujarati population, and there were classes in which more than half the students had the last name Patel.
