Fresh off a defeat on U.S. healthcare legislation, the White House warned rebellious conservative lawmakers that they should get behind President Donald Trump's agenda or he may bypass them on future legislative fights, including tax reform.
The threat by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to build a broad coalition on tax reform that could include moderate Democrats came as the Republican head of the tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives said he hoped to move a tax bill through his panel this spring.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady said his committee had been working on tax reform in parallel with the failed healthcare reform push.
"We've never stopped working," Brady told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo." "We will continue to make improvements."
Brady said the committee plans to move on the bill in the spring. He said he wanted the House blueprint to be the basis for Trump's tax reform plan rather than have competing versions from Treasury and the White House.
Both Trump and Priebus have scolded hardline conservatives who rejected legislation backed by the White House to overhaul Obamacare.
Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Priebus held out the possibility of working with moderate Democrats as well as Republicans to pass other aspects of Trump's agenda, such as his proposed budget, the revamp of the tax code and a renewed effort at healthcare reform.
"If we can come up with a bill that accomplishes the goals of the president with Republicans alone, we'll take it and we'll move forward with it," Priebus said.

hmmm. I’m wondering if he is wheeling and dealing. If one company/country won’t do what you want you THREATEN to do it any way you can with their competition. When in Scotland building the greatest golf course in the world the people put up windmills out on the sea. He tried to sue because of the view being ruined. Needless to say he ruined the view of a few locals in the building but that didn’t matter. Anywho, he went to another part of Britain and was to build a better one. Haven’t kept up with what happened.

Agreed.
And on Gorsuch, I am VERY nervous that he is NOT a conservative justice. I cannot fathom attending (FOR YEARS) an extremely liberal church that advocates for gays marrying, abortion, etc., and you not believing that.
Gorsuch attends such a church. Like a Jeremiah Wright church.
I still think of him as Prince Reibus. Why was he hired by Trump? Did Trump even know of Free Republic? Do Bannon and the Prince agree on things? I think Reibus is a manchurian.
Its like herding cats.
Some cats are very large and very dangerous.
Some are just typical cats and will never be herded.
Others are contented, and they will never be herded.
I read about the church he attends a few weeks ago. It is unsettling but we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed. My one hope is we know honest dialogue during the hearing, such as Judge Bork, would doom any nominee. So evasiveness on past decisions is essentially the order of the day.
Trump has no choice but to work with moderate democrats if the Freedom Caucus will go against his tax reform and his infrastructure bills. He was hired to get things done and as a businessman if one avenue is blocked he has to find another avenue.
We are talking democrats like Joe Manchin who are more conservative than Graham or McCain and should really switch parties. It’s not like he’s going to have anything in common with Maxine Walters.
Actually, this is all going to work out nicely for Trump. The RyanCare bill would have been a disaster. If it passed the House, it would have been bogged down for months in the Senate and made more moderate and then sent back into the House and would have been voted down by the Freedom Caucus. His whole agenda would have been trashed like Clinton in 1993 when his health care plan failed. Trump wasted two weeks on this and saw it was a big loser and moved on. It’s what any smart businessman would do.
Trump won Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania because he attracted a lot of white democrats who like GOVERNMENT benefits but don’t want them going to ILLEGALS. They are fine with government help to pay for their insurance. THEY JUST WANT THEM GOING TO THEM NOT ILLEGALS.
They aren’t movement conservatives. The Freedom Caucus plan would have BETRAYED the people that elected Trump. The Freedom Caucus would have taken away all tax credits and pre-existing condition protections and would have HURT these people. Trump was never going to allow that.
Also, as a master negotiator, Trump knew the Freedom Caucus had to be made an example of and marginalized NOW. He can’t have them threaten to derail every piece of his future agenda because they don’t know how to compromise. Trump kisses nobody’s ring. He would be paralyzed. He’s got to break their will. It’s negotiations 101. Bringing democrats into play increases his negotiating leverage with the Freedom Caucus. Their votes won’t be necessary.
Either people soon forget or they didn't believe what he said...Trump said everyone will be covered (that want to be)...The gov't will pick up the tab for those who can't pay and those who can will get the coverage at a far less rate than we have now...He also said he won't touch Social Security...
Trump is not far right and he didn't campaign far right...Trump truly wants to benefit all Americans, not just the Republicans who want all the money to be in their pockets...
There was a phase 2 and a phase 3 to this current bill and I suspect Trump had plans to iron out the sticky detail in phase 1...That's gone now...
...and then they’re confirmed and can rule any way they want (can you say John Roberts? Briar? O’Connor?)...
sickening, isn’t it?
Watch out there. I knew this from the hit-go with Trump. An idealist he is not. He will compromise if he has to. Not a very popular Freeper point of view.
Agree. He is a pragmatist. All I ever wanted from the guy was a damn wall, kill terrorists, slow down immigration, better trade policy and a government more favorable to American business and corporations.
Most around here want a 100% conservative. He ain’t that and he never was.
I feel the tide turning at Free Republic. Against the President.
YEAH@!! I wouldn’t want to be a conservative.
They’re ####ed!! GREAT!!
GTF out of here. Everyone is closing their eyes as tight as they can right now.
Now I’ll be called a Purist.
There’s enough sheep here to feed a wolf for years.
Really??? And what is the conservative plan but to eliminate Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare and Public Schools??? I don't think that pig would fly very far...
I was being sarcastic. I despise Ryan and want him out, but the FC is screwing with my president and no good will come of it.
Loyalty from elected officials is supposed to be toward the electorate, not some sort of cult of personality support for another pol when that pol is betraying the electorate.
And make no mistake, that is exactly what Trump has done here.
Trump doesn’t want to dance with the voters who brung him
Why do we have to trust him?
Is he Moses?
Did he use any political clout to get ryan et. al. to pass an even semi conservative bill?
Now he is willing to turn to dems instead of Conservatives.
That’s ####ing great.
Trump doesn’t want to dance with the voters who brung him.
Oh, and btw, now his admin is contemplating deeper military involvement in Yemen as well? We didn’t elect him to be a neocon either.
