Stephen Hawking: 'We need a World Government or Technology will destroy us'
TDS ^ | 3/9/17 | TDS

Physicist Stephen Hawking, who some have suggested is a conspiracy in and of himself, is now claiming we need “some form of world government” to protect us from the escalation of technology and artificial intelligence.

“Since civilisation began, aggression has been useful inasmuch as it has definite survival advantages,” he told The Times. “It is hard-wired into our genes by Darwinian evolution. Now, however, technology has advanced at such a pace that this aggression may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war. We need to control this inherited instinct by our logic and reason.” … “The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence,” Professor Hawking said. “A super intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we’re in trouble. “You’re probably not an evil ant-hater who steps on ants out of malice, but if you’re in charge of a hydroelectric green energy project and there’s an anthill in the region to be flooded, too bad for the ants. Let’s not place humanity in the position of those ants.”

Yeah technology threatens humans, it always has. So have Governments.

I’d say that the peoples ability and freedom to take over control of both governments and technologies is the best defense for the human race. As long as we have

.... the freedom with which we can overthrow a threatening Government with the aid of our own technology
or
..... the freedom with which we can overthrow a threatening technology with the aid of our own government

We will survive. As long as we keep our FREEDOM.

Someone once told me that Stephen Hawking was a world class genius. I just raised one eyebrow and smiled.

Time for this iguana to dry up and blow away. His brain is obviously rotting.

Being a genius don’t make one smart - technology used by those who rule is what will destroy us - put the whole world under one government and you just consolidated the absolute power...

Ignoring Hawkings and focusing on the issue he’s talking about - this is one of the reasons I believe the Lord’s return is imminent. People don’t really grasp how fast the world will be changing in another 10-20 years. It is exponential and the change rate is about to become the vertical line in the hyperbolic curve.

This article expands on exactly what you posted. It’s an excellent & well written piece. It speaks of the technology and how fast things are moving.

I think he may be on to something, but I’m petty sure government is not the answer to anything.

I have a theory that the reason we have never found evidence of intelligent alien life in the universe is that none exists. I feel the creation of weapons of mass destruction is inevitable for an advanced civilization. Then the use of those weapons prevents further advances by ending the civilization.

Intelligence prevents its own advancement unless it is great enough to prevent the kind of bickering we see. This too shall pass.

A super intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals

Why do we assume it would have goals?
