After months of planning and deliberations, the 75th Ranger Regiment has been deployed to Syria to participate in the war against ISIS as the coalition closes in on the so-called caliphate’s capital city of Raqqa. Yesterday, the first images emerged of Stryker armored vehicles on their way to Manbij. This comes weeks after Rangers deployed to theater with their Strykers and elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment had been passing through Kurdistan.

By looking at the call sign tag on the back of the Stryker, it is evident that this is 3rd Ranger Battalion out of Fort Benning, Georgia,

I have been hearing about “taking Mosul and Raqqa” for....almost A YEAR...?

This is freaking incredible.

This is taking longer than the Battle of Stalingrad.

I can't speak to Raqqa, but the drive to Mosul had to be carefully executed. Then when they got there, it had to be a block-by-block clearance mission. I spent several months patrolling the streets of eastern Mosul myself. I'm surprised the fight there has progressed as quickly as it has. They even have the airport now (formerly known as FOB Marez and FOB Diamondback). The west side of the city is VERY dense urban. I don't envy anyone fighting in that place, and even I have to admit after my personal dealings with the Iraqi Army and their complete screwing of the proverbial pooch during ISIS' initial offensive, the IA are doing pretty well and they need to keep doing what they're doing.

I'm not sure how Raqqa falls into the grand scheme of things strategically speaking, but the hajis do like to tie themselves to geographical centers (Mecca, Medina, Najaf, mosques in general, etc), so maybe they'll take Raqqa seriously and die en masse in that city.

Another side note: I wonder what's going on with those Syrian rebel groups Obama was so intent on supporting? Have we finally, officially dropped support of those asshats? We could really use the actual Syrian Army (and the Russians) in the fight against ISIS in Syria.

Glad you asked, this is breaking now:

There are only three attack points to Raqqa: Manbij, Kobani and one other that we shouldn’t talk about yet. We now control two of them.

OK, I thought we weren’t going to send ground troops into this battle.

Which side does the deep state have them fighting on?

I pray for their safety, but this is a very dangerous development in that part of the world.

Why not just cut off funding to the rebels??

May the Lord be with and protect these men.
And may they clear out a lot of the rats.

The Syrians, Free Syrian Army, Russians and Turks are now blocked by us. We own the Raqqa theater with the Kurds.

This is it folks, it’s our fight, lock and load. Here we go.

Both full battalions? That’s quite a committment of our Spec Ops forces. There are like five different sides fighting each other. I do not think this is a good idea.

Yeah, what about that “boots on the ground” thing??

It really doers take time to shape a battlefield, we had to have an endgame on Mosul first. We’ve been building airfields in NE Syria for some time.

The Kurds needed lots of training in communications and transport.

By the “rebels” I think you mean the Free Syrian Army. They have been a rabble and a mess from the git go. Other than translators, useless.

Good hunting to the 75th.

“By the “rebels” I think you mean the Free Syrian Army. “

The last iteration of this Middle East exercise (Libya) ended up installing AQ. Moreover, the Russians are there and they were invited. I don’t like this at all.

We have two missions.

First we have to keep all of our “friends” from shooting at each other. Particularly bad are the Turks and Kurds.

Second, we have to destroy ISIS. They are a very lethal and thinking enemy but tactically very available to be degraded.

Now, could our political leaders figure out how to win the peace this time, after the shooting is over?

Look forward, partition Kurdish Syria to the Kurds. I’m getting ahead of myself, but am still very bitter about the results of Iraq.
