While Rex Tillerson is on his first overseas trip as Secretary of State, his aides laid off staff at the State Department on Thursday.
Much of seventh-floor staff, who work for the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources and the Counselor offices, were told today that their services were no longer needed.
These staffers in particular are often the conduit between the secretarys office to the country bureaus, where the regional expertise is centered. Inside the State Department, some officials fear that this is a politically-minded purge that cuts out much-needed expertise from the policy-making, rather than simply reorganizing the bureaucracy.
There are clear signals being sent that many key foreign policy portfolios will be controlled directly by the White House, rather than through the professional diplomats. Not a single State Department official was included in the White House meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week. Trumps son-in-law, Jared Kushner - who has no regional expertise or diplomatic experience - had a greater role in the meeting than the Senate-confirmed secretary of State.

DRAIN THE SWAMP! DRAIN THE SWAMP! DRAIN THE ...
Uh -- whut?
My post addressed the specific point in the column about the role of Jared Kushner.
You know Jared Kushner, don't you? He's the son of that convicted criminal from New Jersey who has spent most of the last few decades as one of the state's biggest Democratic fundraisers.
It is so funny how different the comments are on CBS News.com from readers versus just about ANY and I mean ANY website out there many of us read.
I’m always absolutely amazed just how stacked user comments are on WaPo, NYT and CBS etc. When you get to any site outside the dinosaur media domains the comments are almost 80% anti-government/establishment and up to 70% conservative.
These comments, all anti-Trump, all pro state department.
I mean.... who is home drinking their coffee thinking of pro state department spin?
Is there one person, one unpaid person, one citizen that sits home and has a pro state department viewpoint of the world??????
"So what you do is you take the specifications from the customers and you bring them down to the software engineers?"
I got a tour of the seventh floor when I was ten years old.
I saw a lot of the various offices, conference rooms, the big reception room for the SOS back then around 1970.
The security wasn’t so tight back then and I remember going all over the building even down in the basement where they had a room with old fashioned telephone switchboards in it.
Trump said he wanted to protect American jobs (not Ivy League jobs).
NTOWY!
Removing these traitors is a must at every level.
They can all work remotely from Portal, North Dakota.
BOOM!
Thomas Jefferson, our first Secretary of State started off with a very small staff and absolutely no knowledge.
There are 285 diplomatic facilities, 65,000 employees and only 195 countries in this world. We have far too many employees in State.
He is good at restoration, eh? Stripping a building down to its frame and replacing all the termite infested, mold covered, and water damaged materials.
Agreed. I have mixed views about him. But when I learned Gorelick was his attorney I got that sense of dread...uh oh...
Plus, he may be very smart, even wise in some ways, but he’s young and liberal. We’ll see. Keeping an open mind and a watchful eye.
Every day is Christmas and every night Halloween for the Dems.
“This is the same Jared Kushner who retained JAMIE GORELICK as his attorney to advise him in matters related to potential conflicts of interest in his White House role.”
Hers is a name that keep turning up in all the wrong places. I want her gone gone.
The swamp must be really deep if it got all the way up to the 7th floor.
MAGA!
“GWB was steadfast in not cleaning house of the disloyal, politicized staff put in by Clinton. Either he was in denial, or stupid, or complicit. I havent figured out which”
Who do you think you’re fooling?
The Bush Crime Family is the fountainhead of the New World Order and as dirty as they come! Poppie was the CIA guy running the sniper teams in Dealey Plaza, as J. Edgar Hoover well knew! Why do you they they were so incompetent and had to end up relying on the “Magic Bullet” theory to cover their sorry asses???
“This is the same Jared Kushner who retained JAMIE GORELICK as his attorney to advise him in matters related to potential conflicts of interest in his White House role. “
Hadn’t heard that. If true, the best strategy would be to listen to the “mistress of disaster” and do the opposite thing!
Spring house cleaning.
Read "Iococca". In his book he tells of how he was now in the outs with the Ford clan and mgt ( and the kicker was they made a prototype or clay model at one point that they said no too, of which was not all that dissimilar to the Chrysler Mini-Van {where he went after Ford ! }) and they stuck him running a warehouse with cracked linoleum flooring, so he got the message and quit and the rest is history.
These are probably not rock stars like Lee I., and where they ever end up is their choice career wise, but giving them an internal transfer to DOD where they are working in scrapping out old Hummers, ( by hand and tools ) and other Military Vehicles might also work ;-).
Countryman worries that the White House is displaying an intent not rely on the State Department for foreign policy in that no one will be in place to challenge the edicts drawn up in the Oval Office.
